Mooney Art Collection

Rembrandt, Picasso, and Manet are just a few masters on display at this permanent exhibit recently opened to the public. This impressive collection of engravings, etchings and prints is normally something seen in large metropolitan cities. The exhibit is housed in the Charles City Public Library.

Like many communities in Iowa, Charles City holds a Carnegie Building in its list of historic buildings. However, unlike many Iowa cities, Charles City uses theirs to the true nature of the Carnegie purpose. The building houses the Charles City Arts Center, with a collection of local and regional artwork. Rotating exhibits range from watercolors to modern impressionistic art.

Fri. & Sat. 1-5 pm

Current classes:

After school art program ,"Make Stuff", for grades K-5.
Thursdays 3:30-5:00 pm.
Cost is $45 nonmembers, $40 members.
Classes run in month long sessions.

Preschool art program "Doodle Bugs".
For children under the age of 5 and their caregivers.

Pottery class scheduled for March 3 and 10 from 1-3 pm.

North Iowa Bluegrass & Oldtime Music Jam

Get your guitar and jug out of the closet and tune up your strings for this flashback to the olden' days. The monthly acoustic gathering is open to anyone who wants to watch and listen, or even participate and pluck along. If you want to join in, bring an instrument as sophisticated as a hammer dulcimer or as simple as spoons to this monthly jam session at the Charles City Arts Center. Third Thursday of every month, 7 PM. Open to instrumentalists and spectators.

Stony Point Players

Charles City loves the spotlight... some people like it a little more than others. For these people, Charles City offers the Stony Point Players. This troupe of actors performs on the Charles Theatre stage, for small performances and the Charles City Middle School stage for large productions. The organization's repertoire includes plays, musicals, and dinner theater. Casts range in size from one person, one acts, to more than 50 people in a grand musical productions.

One of the last standing Art Deco theaters left from the 1930's is in Charles City. The outside of the Charles T
heatre is a treat in itself. Tall pillars and a jutting display greet you as your enter the theatre. Inside is home to nightly first-run movies. Live performances are also held in the Charles Theatre by the Stony Point Players.

Charles City Jazz Festival

This is a premier competition for area high school jazz bands and their last chance to go to state jazz finals in Des Moines. The music begins at 7 AM and goes through the host band's (Charles City High School) performance. The event is hosted every March by the Charles City Band Parents' Support Group.
The next Jazz Festival is March, 2007.
Art-a-Fest

An annual art influx returns to Charles City every August. The festival promotes and supports area part-time and full-time artists and their work. Booths include pottery, stained glass, watercolor, wood art, and more. In excess of 50 artists attend this annual event. If you're looking to revamp a bland wall in your home with some new artwork, come join us.

Charles City Singers

One of North Central Iowa's finest community choirs is located in Charles City. This auditioned choir performs a wide repertoire of music ranging from classical to modern. The choir gives two concerts a year, one around Christmas and another in the spring. Class is the middle name for this group. Their concert attire is formal dresses for women and tuxedos for men.
The next concert is in late April at Trinity United Methodist Church.
Charles City Municipal Band

The true hometown community concert. This summer organization is comprised of those who love playing musical instruments but didn't go professional. The municipal band performs four concerts each summer, three as a concert band and one as a jazz band. No auditions required. The band rehearses at the Charles City Middle School band room each Wednesday in summer.
Concerts begin the first Sunday in June.

Camarata St. Charles

The renaissance period comes alive every time these musicians perform. Dressed in authentic renaissance garb, these musicians look the part and their music confirms the era. Available at various events throughout the year, Camarata St. Charles has been seen at Art-A-Fest, the Festival of Trees and occasionally hosts a renaissance dinner.
