Harold Lloyd Bailey


Harold Lloyd Bailey, 63, of Charles City, died Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at his residence of ALS (Lou Gehrig‚s Disease).

Funeral services for Harold Bailey will be held 2 p.m. Monday, July 7, 2008, at the Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Gary Van Wert will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will continue Monday at the church an hour prior to the service. 

Harold Lloyd Bailey was born January 5, 1945, in Belmond, the son of Lloyd and Dorothy (Olsen) Bailey. He graduated from Dumont High School. On March 20, 1965, he was united in marriage to Judy Ritzman at the Central Methodist Church in Charles City. After living in Waverly until 1970, they farmed south of Charles City. Harold was employed with Terex in Waverly for 39 years, retiring in 2003. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Harold enjoyed farming and raising cattle. Family was always important to Harold and he looked forward to being a part of their lives. Harold will also be remembered for the mischievous spark in his eye.

Living family members include his wife, Judy Bailey of Charles City; two daughters, Hope (Mick) Timmerman of Cedar Falls and Kathy (Dave) Strauser of Clarksville; four grandchildren, Jordan and Nathan Timmerman and Carly and Courtney Strauser; his mother, Dorothy Bailey of Hampton; and three sisters, Karen (Harry) Jungling of Bristow, Linda (John) Campbell of Hampton and Ellen (Larry) Day of Shell Rock.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Bailey in August of 1985.

Bernard L. Meyer


Bernard L. Meyer, 78, of Charles City, died Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Bernard Meyer will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastor June Keel will officiate. Burial will be in Osage Cemetery in Osage. Military Honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Bernard Loren Meyer was born May 5, 1930, at Fairmont, Minn., the son of Roy and Ruth (Flora) Meyer. He graduated from the Rudd High School in 1949. As a senior he played 1st base on the 1949 State Championship Baseball Team. On January 16, 1951, he was united in marriage to Jeanne Brandau at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. He served in the United States Marines and in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. Bernard was employed for 38 years by the Milwaukee Railroad as a Telegrapher, which later became the Soo Line. He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, American Legion, Honor Guard, and Charles City Singers. Bernard enjoyed volunteering on the Ruthven Fire Department for 14 years. His interests included square dancing, golf, working with stain glass, crossword puzzles, and the church choir.

Living family members include his wife, Jeanne Meyer of Charles City; five children, Cathy (Tom) Dole of Brandon, Miss., Mike (Jackie) Meyer of Ruthven, Monty (Beverly) Meyer of Bettendorf, Rhonda (Kevin) Griffin of Laurens, and Jim (Brenda) Meyer of Omaha, Nebr.; 10 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; step-mother, Florence Meyer of Fairmont, Minn.;two half sisters, Janice (Don) Larsen of Warner Springs, Calif. and Nancy (Bill) Roslansky of Fairmont, Minn.; and a half brother, Steven (Becky) Meyer of Fairmont, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and infant son, Loren Meyer in 1953.

Phyllis "Fern" Hobert, 88, of Charles City, died Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Phyllis Fern Newton Hobert was born March 29, 1920, at Hartville, Mo., the daughter of Esther Gene and Mary Sada (Young) Newton. She graduated from the Charles City High School in 1939. On September 28, 1941, she was united in marriage to Wendell Hobert at Charles City. Fern was employed part-time at the Salsbury Baptist Home. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Cordova Circle and Central Star Club. Fern enjoyed volunteering at the church kitchen, Bible School and Meals onWheels. Her interests included gardening, canning and freezing vegetables, baking, helping at church, traveling and card club for more then 40 years.

Living family members include her husband, Wendell Hobert of Charles City; six children, Linda (Robert) Milton of Phoenix, Ariz., Robert (Judy) Hobert of Penn Valley, Calif., Lester (Linda) Hobert of Charles
City, Mary (Jerry) Cross of Forest City, Edward (Teresa) Hobert of Charles City and Aaron Hobert of Charles City; 14 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; two brothers, Duane (Carolyn) Newton of Carson City, Nev. and Kenneth Dean Newton of Burlington; two sister-in-laws, Dorothy (Don) Swinton of Waverly and Norma (Paul) Nieman of Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

Gladys Winters


Gladys Winters, 81, of Charles City, died Monday, June 23, 2008, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Funeral services for Gladys Winters will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City. Pastor Gary Van Wert will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Gladys Irene Darrow Winters, was born May 8, 1927, at Deerfield, the daughter, of Delbert and Vera (Strickler) Darrow. She grew up on a farm where at a young age she took a great interest in cooking and by the age of ten cooked and served entire family meals. Gladys graduated from the Colwell High School as valedictorian. She married James Webb in 1944. From this union a son, Stanley, was born. They later divorced. On October 26, 1958, she was united in marriage to Forest "Louie" Winters. They farmed near Charles City. Gladys was employed as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell for 31 years. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church where she served as president, secretary and treasurer several times over the years for the Trinity United Methodist Church Women's Clubs and Midi's group. Gladys loved cooking. She had a collection of over 200 cookbooks and 20 plus boxes of clipped recipes as she was always ready to try something new. Many of her favorite recipes can be found in locally published cookbooks. She made cookies many years for the Red Cross Blood Bank each month, averaging up to 12 dozen a month. Gladys loved to garden and plant flowers. Flowers surrounded their home. She was a member of the Cowbelles, Beef Producers, Cattlemen's Club, Senior Club and several other organizations.

Living family members include her three children, Carol Anne (Larry Schriever of Floyd, Stanley (Cheryl) Webb of Cannon Falls, Minn. and Michael (Sherry) Winters of Osage; eight grandchildren, Eric, Letti, Lauri, Troy, Tamara, Eric, Heidi, Stephen and their spouses; 26 great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Carol Litterer of Charles City and Judy (Don) Bluhm of Charles City; three brothers, Dean (Anita) Darrow of Charles City, Keith (Alydth) Darrow of Cedar Falls and Paul (Sharon) Darrow of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Robert R. Swab


Robert R. Swab, 84, of Charles City, died Sunday, June 15, 2008, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Robert Swab will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Gary Van Wert of the Trinity United Methodist Church will officiate. Robert Raymond Swab was born September 13, 1923, at Marble Rock, the son of Clarence and Elsie (Kivell) Swab. He graduated from the Greene High School and attended 2 years at Overland College. At the age of 17 Robert entered the United States Navy where he was stationed in the South Seas. While in the Navy, Robert attained the rank of Ensign and began training to become a pilot. After leaving the Navy, Robert finished his training and became a private pilot for his business. On April 20, 1947, he was united in marriage to Wreatha Williams at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. For 52 years he was an owner of Allied Construction Company in Charles City. Robert was a member of the Elks Club, president of the Iowa Concrete Association and served on the board of directors for First Citizens Bank. His interests included playing golf, playing cards with his friends, operating heavy equipment, construction, and spending time with his daughter and grandchildren.

Living family members include his wife, Wreatha Swab of Charles City; daughter, Teresa Nelson of Duluth, Minn.; four grandchildren, Melanie Nelson, Amy Nelson, John Nelson and Leah (Randy) Ritzko; great granddaughter, Violet Ritzko; brother, Max Swab of Marshalltown; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, Wilma Grant, Aileen Samek and Marguerite Swab.

Viola Todd was born March 29, 1910, at Fredericksburg, the daughter of Christian and Edith (Aikin) Gitsch. She graduated from the Charles City High School in 1929. On September 5, 1936, she was united in Marriage to Eldon G. Todd at Galena, Ill. Viola was employed for several years at the Bell Telephone Company as an operator. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, numerous Bridge Clubs and the McKinley Home Crafts. Her interests included playing cards, knitting and crocheting.

Living family members include her son, Mike Todd of Kansas City, Mo.; and granddaughter, Kathryn Todd of Minneapolis, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Sheryl Ann; and granddaughter, Mary.

John C. Seckar


John C. Seckar, 85, of Charles City, died Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at his home in Charles City.

Memorial services for John Seckar will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Inurnment will be held at a later date.

John Charles Seckar was born March 1, 1923, on a farm near Erin, N.Y., the son of Joseph and Apolena (Tethal) Seckar. His early childhood was spent in the New York area until the age of four, when the family moved to St. Ansgar and then to Austin, Minn. During the depression his parents bought a small acreage in Mitchell. John graduated in 1941 from the Mitchell Community Schools. After graduation he entered the U.S. Air Force on June 10, 1941. He was stationed for one year in Australia. John was a First Lieutenant and flew 36 missions over enemy territory. On April 21, 1945, he was united in marriage to Emma M. Loden at Monroe, La. To this union four children were born. They made their home in Mitchell, during this time John served on the city council, school board, cemetery board and as mayor. John spent 41 years working for Oliver/White Farm Equipment Co. in both blue collar and management positions. He held many positions including night superintendent. In 1960, they moved to Charles City where he served on the draft board, as a Boy Scout leader and taught gun safety. John was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served on the
Stewardship Committee and chaperoned a youth group to New Orleans. He was very proud of his 47 year membership in the Floyd Lions Club. During retirement, John and Emma spent 24 wonderful years in Harlingen Tex., where they enjoyed the company of their friends at Emerald Grove Resort. The family spent many enjoyable times together traveling and camping. He was pleased with his involvement initiating and participating in family reunions on both sides of the family that remain active to this day. John also enjoyed photography and the companionship of many appreciative dogs. John had many physical challenges during the last several years. He was a dialysis patient for three years and survived numerous surgeries for his heart and back.

Living family members include his wife, Emma Seckar of Charles City; his children, Paula (Terry) Wittmer of Sheridan, Wyo., David (Jenny) Seckar of Floyd, Patricia Seckar of Decorah and Marilyn (Ted) Horsley of Sheridan, Wyo.; nine grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.

Thecla L. Ott, 84, of Charles City, died Monday, June 9, 2008, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Thecla Ott will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. The Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery.

Thecla Lorraine Wenthold Ott was born January 7, 1924, at Festina, the daughter of Henry and Margaret (Kleve) Wenthold. She attended school in Festina. On April 24, 1946, she was united in marriage to Oscar Ott at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Festina. Thecla was very active in helping her husband on their farm near Rudd. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Rosary Society and Senior Citizens Center. Her interests included crocheting, needle point, cooking, baking and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Lester Beaver

Lester Beaver, 87, of Charles City, died Friday, June 6, 2008, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Lester Jewel Beaver was born March 27, 1921, at Sergeant, Minn., the son of Roy and Laura (Newman) Beaver. He received his education at Rose Creek, Minn. Lester proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. On December 28, 1946, he was united in marriage to Peggy Roy. They lived all of their lives in Charles City where Lester worked for 34 years at Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company. Lester also did painting, repaired lawnmowers, snow blowers, and small engines, and had a Watkins route. He was happiest when he was busy working. Lester was a member of the American Legion, U.A.W. as well as a life long member of the V.F.W.

Living family members include his wife of 61 years, Peggy Beaver of Charles City; three children, Dave (Deborah) Beaver, Connie Beaver, and Dennis (Deborah) Beaver all of Charles City; five grandchildren, Ammie (James) Joslin, Kevin Beaver, Shannon (Amber) Hoy, Jennifer (Shawn) Castillo and Jacob Beaver; three great grandchildren, Lincoln Joslin, Austin Castillo and Taylor Hoy; and four sisters, Joy Delaney of Trona, Calif., Mary Pryor and Alice Merical both of Des Moines and Ruth(Merle) Pannhoff of Mason City.

Marcine McDevitt, 92, of Charles City, formerly of Keokuk, died Thursday, June 5, 2008, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Marcine Elizabeth Dupy McDevitt was born March 10, 1916, at Ottumwa, the daughter of Oscar and Catherine (McManis) Dupy. She graduated from the Keokuk Senior High School in 1933. On August 18, 1940, she was united in marriage to John McDevitt at Keokuk. They lived in Keokuk all their lives until moving to Charles City in 2003. Marcine worked many years as a medical secretary at a Doctor's office. She enjoyed doing crafts of various kinds, needlework and taking car rides especially along the
Mississippi.

Living family members include her husband, John McDevitt of Charles City; three children, Michael (Jane) McDevitt of Coatsville, Pa., Marcia (Richard) Olesen of Charles City and Cathy (Bob) Guess of Amarillo, TX; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and a sister, Virginia Mollers of Keokuk.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two granddaughters, Debbie and Diana Guess; a brother, Carl Dupy; a sister, Arline Dupy; and a brother-in-law, Wayne Mollers.

Velma Pint, 87, of Charles City, died Wednesday, June 4, 2008, at her home.

Velma Irene Conaway Pint was born December 9, 1920, at Perry, the daughter of Lawrence "Dick" and Esther (Bales) Conaway. She graduated from the Perry High School in 1936. On May 29, 1953, she was united in marriage to Leo Pint at Sioux Falls, S.D. They lived and worked in Charles City all of their lives. Leo died on November 6, 2005. Velma was a member of Bethany Alliance Church and the V.F.W. Women's Auxiliary. Her interests included making ceramics, camping, fishing, and working with her flowers. Velma will be remembered for her ministering to the needs of others in a variety of ways. Her grandchildren were always very special to Velma and she looked forward to sharing their lives together.

Living family members include four children, Leonard (Edna) Gottschalk of Phoenix, Ariz., Larry (Nancy) Pint of Manchester, Daryl (Dawn) Pint of Waverly and Cherie (Greg) Stough of Charles City; 10 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and a brother, Mahlon (Donna) Conaway of
Perry. She will also be missed by her cat Katie.

Mary Weisenstein

Mary Weisenstein, 91, of Charles City, died Sunday, June 8, 2008, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Mary Mishler Weisenstein was born October 1, 1916, in Bremer County, the daughter of Herb and Bertha (Stufflebeam) Mishler. She received her education at Nashua. In 1935 she was united in marriage to Daniel Weisenstein at Waverly. She was a member of the Baptist Church. Mary's interests included sewing, knitting, crocheting and doing various crafts.

Living family members include three children, LaVonne (Richard) Butterfield of Center Point, Francis (Cleo) Weisenstein of Granger, Ind., and Robert Weisenstein of Prairie du Chein, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and a brother, Don Mishler of Waverly.

Ruth “Toots” Dickhoff, 96, of Charles City, died Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Ruth Dickhoff will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Reverend Carl Ries, pastor of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City.

Ruth Mae Green Dickhoff was born January 9, 1912, at Charles City, the daughter of William and Edith (Bovia) Green. She received her education at Charles City. On April 29, 1932, she was united in marriage to Donald Dickhoff at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Donald died on November 23, 1959. Toots spent her life working for others. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and past member of the Blue Star Mothers and Vista Volunteers. Her interests included gardening, baking, canning, reading, dancing, fishing, singing and playing „500‰. Her life centered around her family and she took every opportunity to share her life with them.

Living family members include three children, Bill (Jeanette) Dickhoff of Des Moines, Sharon Herman of Charles City and David Dickhoff of Mt. Pleasant; 14 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; 12 great great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Marie (Don) Nord of Minn.; and several nieces and nephews including Gayle Green.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Danny and Chuck Dickhoff; a daughter, Jeannine Bluhm; an infant grandson, baby Dickhoff; a great grandson, Stephen Davidson; three brothers; and three sisters.

Robert Schmidt, 100, of Floyd, died Monday, June 2, 2008, at his home.

Funeral services for Robert Schmidt will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor LaVonne Kaasa, pastor of the Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery at Floyd.

Robert Hanf Schmidt was born on the family farm south of Floyd on April 13, 1908, the son of Wencel and Minnie (Hanf) Schmidt. He graduated from the Floyd High School in 1925 and attended Iowa State University. On September 29, 1934, he was united in marriage to Angeline Beekman at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They worked on the family farm and fed cattle even into the retirement years. Angeline died on October 4, 1989. Robert served as secretary of the Floyd Consolidated School for several years, as township clerk and helped in establishing the Floyd County Soil Conservation District. His interests included livestock, Chesapeake dogs and raising geraniums.

Living family members include a daughter, Sandra Ewalt of Floyd; three grandchildren, Darcy Ewalt Barrentine and her family Briana Rae and Brandon Luke Barrentine, Mark (Kay) Ewalt and Kyle Ewalt and his family Kara Amber and Shelby Ray Ewalt; a sister, Vanita Workman of Floyd; several nieces and nephews; and many good neighbors and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Angeline.

Martha Hosek

Martha Hosek, 92, of Charles City, died Monday, June 2, 2008, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Martha Hosek will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. The Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

The family will greet friends at the church on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. where the rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m.

Martha Havel Hosek was born March 3, 1916, in Howard County, the daughter of Frank and Anna (Zak) Havel. On September 24, 1934, she was united in marriage to William J. Hosek at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. Along with helping her husband on the farm, the two of them owned and operated Malek and Hosek General Store in Schley. After moving to Charles City Martha was employed at Salsbury Laboratories and the Up Town Café. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and St. Rose Circle. Her interests included crocheting, flowers, gardening and fishing.

Living family members include one sister, Anna Samec of Cresco; sister-in-law, Rose Bouska of Cresco; and several nieces; nephews; close friends; and neighbors.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill on August 7, 2007; three brothers, Lewis Havel, Frank Havel Jr. and Marceline Havel; and eight sisters, Frances Frana, Rose Triska, Mary Frana, Celia Vokaty, Agnes Milota, Lillian Pecinovsky, Emma Moravetz, and Marcella Opat.

Esther Darrow, of Charles City, died Saturday, May 31, 2008, at the 9th street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Esther Darrow will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Gary Van Wert will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Esther Magdalene Legel Lines Darrow was born February 19, 1909, at Roanoke, Ill., the daughter of Louis and Anna (Brugger) Legel. The Legel family later moved to Nashua where she graduated from the Nashua High School. On September 26, 1931 she married Volna Lines. To this union two children, Merlin and Barbara, were born. It was on October 6, 1955, that Esther was united in marriage to Kenneth Darrow at Las Vegas, Nev. After Kenneth's retirement from Ford in 1985, they returned to Charles City. Esther was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Her greatest joy was in sharing her life with the grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Living family members include two children, Merlin Lines of St. Croix Falls, Wis. and Barbara (Walt) Denson of Rapid City, S.D.; 7 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; a brother, Edwin (Erica) Legel; and several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth; a grandson, Tony Joe; a daughter-in-law, Geri Lines; and two sisters, Elsa Stille and Louise Wright.

Linda Rae Ferch Webb, 55, of Charles City, died Friday, May 23, 2008.

Linda Rae Ferch Webb was born April 21, 1953, at Charles City, the daughter of Harold and Lillian (Horton) Ferch. She graduated from the Charles City High School. Linda managed the Best Budget Inn in Charles City for two years. Her interests included gardening, bowling, collecting recipe books, owls and Pillsbury Dough Boys, and spending time with her grandchildren. Linda will be remembered as a great cook and a generous person.

Living family members include three daughters, Niki Hendrikson of Mason City, Dawn Lunn and special friend Wade Marzen of Buffalo Center and Joy (Jason) Jepperson of Charles City; her mother, Lillian Ferch of Charles City; ten grandchildren, Joshua, Ashley, Jacob, Kira, Paige, Kristina, Samantha, Brody, Kastin and Twila; two sisters, Pat (Paul) Krueger of Ionia and Micki (Daniel) Bartelt of Charles City; brother, Stanley Ferch of Golden, Colo.; many nieces; nephews; and cousins.

Rita Catherine Burgart


Rita Catherine Burgart, age 74 of New Hampton, died Wednesday morning May 21, 2008, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in New Hampton.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center, New Hampton with Msgr. Carl Schmitt celebrating the Mass. The pall will be placed by her children. Lector for the service will be nephew, Keith Weigel. Michelle Lau will be the organist accompanying the North Washington's Men Choir and the Holy Family Resurrection Choir. Hymns will be "Be Not Afraid", "You Are Near", "On Eagle's Wings" and "Lead Me Lord". Eucharistic ministers will be sisters, Marlene Weigel and Elaine Wedeking. Presenting the offertory gifts will be her brother, Cletus Laures and sister, Diane Brandt.

Rita Catherine (Laures) Burgart was born August 17, 1933, in New Hampton, Iowa the daughter of Vincent and Ida (Schueller) Laures. She received her education at St. Mary’s Grade School and High School in North Washington, graduating in 1951.

On April 22, 1953, at the Immaculate Conception Church, North Washington Rita was united in marriage to Gerald Francis Burgart. To this union ten children were born. The couple lived in the North Washington area for many years having also lived in Charles City for two years. In 1973, the Burgarts moved to New Hampton. Gerald died of cancer on March 10, 1977, at the age of 48. Rita worked for 24 years at the former Sara Lee, retiring in 1995. In 2000, Rita began her long battle with the neurological disease, Cortical Basal Degeneration.

Rita loved baking, gardening, making quilts, playing cards and bean bags. She loved the time she spent with family and friends, who will miss her dearly. Memberships include Holy Family Parish and Rosary Society, the Catholic Daughters of the America’s and the VFW Auxiliary in Alta Vista.

Survivors include three sons, Mike (Julie) Burgart of Cedar Falls, Steve (Joan) Burgart of Calmar, Stan (Audra) Burgart of New Hampton; seven daughters, Nancy (Claude) Babcock of Lawler, Cindy (Larry) Heying, Sue (Randy) Breitbach and Bonnie (Steve) Collins all of New Hampton, Denise (Randy) Ayers of Lidderdale, IA, Wendy (Kevin) Einck and Carol (Steve) Anderson all of New Hampton; 27 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Virgil (Kathleen) Laures of New Hampton and Cletus (Jeanne) Laures of Ionia; three sisters, Marlene (Bill) Weigel of New Hampton, Elaine (Roger) Wedeking and Diane (David) Brandt all of Charles City; one brother-in-law, Bob Burgart of North Washington; two sisters-in-law, Darlene McGowan and MaDonna Laures both of New Hampton.

Frederick Lynther, 68, a resident of the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City, IA passed away Thursday (May 22, 2008) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Cremation has taken place in the care of Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home. Irene A. Selvig

Irene A. Selvig, 76, of 1296 Underwood Ave. in Charles City, IA died Tuesday (May 20, 2008) at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, (May 23, 2008) at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St. in Charles City with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Interment will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City.

Irene Amelia (Schoborg) Selvig, the daughter of Ben and Anna (Hager) Schoborg was born on November 18, 1931 in Marshalltown, IA. She received her education in the Marshalltown area. On June 29, 1952 Irene was united in marriage to Carl “Mike” M. Selvig in St. Anthony, IA. Mrs. Selvig was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved to bake for Sunday family meals, crocheting and tending her large garden. Irene was employed as a bus driver for twenty years in the Charles City area. She also helped her husband farm.

Irene had been a homemaker throughout most all of her life. She took great pride in providing for her family, and being a nurturing mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was very family oriented and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Irene’s life are her four sons, Michael (Linda) Selvig, Richard Selvig of Charles City, Thomas (Ellen) Selvig of Riceville and John (Beverly) Selvig of New Hampton; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Sally Bartosh of Worthington, MN Rose Long of Marshalltown, IA and one brother, Ronald Schoborg of Harrison, AR; as well as nieces, nephews and friends.

Grace M. Griffin

Grace Mae (Boggess) Griffin, 95, formerly of 306 S. Joslin St. in Charles City, IA died Sunday (May 18, 2008) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, (May 23, 2008) at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel Lane in Charles City with the Rev. Carl A. Ries presiding. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

Grace Mae (Boggess) Griffin, the daughter of Calvin Sr. and Mabel (Frazee) Boggess was born on March 14, 1913 in rural Bassett, IA. She received her education at the Deerfield #9 School and graduated from the Colwell High School on May 18, 1934. On July 10, 1935 Grace was united in marriage to Alfred D. Griffin at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, IA. Mrs. Griffin was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved to bake goodies, embroidery, making quilts and enjoyed going fishing with her husband, Alfred. Grace worked at the Checkerboard Café and she was a nurses aide at the De Buehr Nursing Home, both in Charles City, IA.

Grace had been a homemaker most all of her life. She took great pride in providing for her family, and being a nurturing mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was very family oriented and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Rosary Society and St. Jude’s Circle. Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Grace’s life are her two children, Theresa M. “Terri” (George) Laubscher of Charles City and Bernard A. (Irene) Griffin of Ankeny, IA; seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren; two sisters, Gertrude “Gertie” Houser of New Hampton, IA and Maebelle Stelzer of Charles City, IA as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

William "Willie" Edwin Sears, Jr


William "Willie" Edwin Sears, Jr., 74, of Charles City, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Willie Sears will be held 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Burial will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Greenfield Cemetery in Harmony, Minn.

William Edwin Sears, Jr. was born November 8, 1933, at Cresco, the son of William G. and Edna (Gager) Sears, Sr. He received his education at rural schools near Harmony, Minn. William proudly served in the United States Army. On July 7, 1957, William was united in marriage to Beverly Vatland at Mabel, Minn. In 1960 they moved to Charles City where Willie was employed at the Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company for 32 years. He also worked at Molstead Motors for several years and enjoyed working all his life as a farm hand. Willie was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Amvets. His interests included gardening and farming.

Living family members include his wife, Beverly Sears of Charles City; a brother, Merlin Sears of Charles City; and four sisters, Marion Caldwell and Margaret Torkelson both of Harmony, Minn., Faye Pederson of LaCrosse, Wis., Karen (Terry) Walker of Lake City, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

David William Markle

David William Markle passed away on May 12 at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City, after an nine year battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, May 15, 2008 at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastors Dennis Niezwaag and Ruth Yeaton officiating. Burial will be at the New Hampton City Cemetery at 1 PM. Military Honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-8 PM Wednesday. Visitation will continue Thursday at the church an hour prior to the service.

David was born on July 14, 1929 at St. Joseph Hospital in New Hampton, the first child of Fred H. and Bessie L. (Olson) Markle. He attended New Hampton Schools, graduating in 1947.

In 1950 he married Betty Lou Knutson at the Jerico Lutheran Church. Two children were born of this union. Betty passed away in 1993. In 1998, he married former New Hampton High School classmate, Dolores Zipse Boerschel at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City.

Dave was baptized both Methodist and Baptist. He was confirmed by adult confirmation at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Greene. He was a former congregational president at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and was a current member and former congregational president at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. He was active on many church boards. Since 1998, he also had attended the First Baptist Church in Charles City.

During High School, Dave worked for his father at Markle Implement (International) in New Hampton and worked on tractors for local farmers. After graduation, he worked for Henning Implement and Raush Trucking. Dave served his country in the Korean Conflict. In 1955 he opened his own Service Station, “Dave’s DX” in New Hampton. In 1957 he joined Dale Ott and the Ford Tractor Company in Charles City and Greene, where he had moved to in 1962. That business was destroyed by the tornado in 1968, with Dave sustaining two fractured ankles in the tornado. In 1968 he joined Clint Richards in opening a John Deere Dealership in Charles City. He moved from Greene to Charles City in 1978, and he and Betty “retired” in 1983, giving him over 30 years in the implement business.

Retirement heralded a new frenzy of work and volunteerism. He won the Republican bid for Floyd County Supervisor in 1986 and served in that capacity for 4 years. He was very proud to serve on the Floyd County Memorial Hospital’s Board of Commissioners for many years. In 1991 he began assisting with funeral home duties at Hage Funeral Home in Charles City, and continued when it became a part of the Fullerton Family of Funeral Homes. He also assisted with Fontanelle Hybrid in equipment design, planting, and harvesting.

In 1994, Dave was honored to receive the Charles City Area Chamber of Commerce “Man of the Year” Award. Dave was a member or former member of many area organizations: Charles City Chamber of Commerce, Noon Kiwanis, Moose Lodge, Parkinson Support Group, District Representative-Elderbridge, Floyd County Historical Society, Foster Grandparent Board Chairman, Chair of Floyd County Memorial Hospital Commissioners, Interim Administrator for Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Hospice Advisory Board Chairman, City of Charles City Road Task Force, FFA, NAICC Ag. Advisory Board, Floyd-Mitchell Landfill Agency, District Rep to State Supervisors Assoc and State Dept of Corrections, Area Development Association, Co-chair of Mental Health/Mental Retardation Board, Chair Emergency Food and Shelter Board, EMS Board, Floyd County Ambulance Board, Chair Hazardous Material Board, Chair Human Services Board, Comprehensive Systems Recycling Committee, Floyd County MERV Committee, Floyd County Farm Safety Camp, Lutheran Social Services Empowerment Grant Program, and Floyd County Steam Engine Day Volunteer. He was a former Councilman for the Greene City Council.

In his free time, Dave enjoyed spending time with friends fishing in Canada and hunting in Wyoming, playing cards, reading, or traveling. His declining health required him to move to the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in November, 2007.

Dave is survived by his wife Dolores, daughter Barbara (Larry) Tommingo of Charles City, son Bruce (Sonia) Markle of Gainesville, Texas, stepsons Bryan Boerschel of Peachtree City, Georgia, and Bruce (Viva) Boerschel of Charles City. Also surviving is one brother, Donald (Charlotte) Markle of New Hampton. Other survivors include stepbrother-in-law Harry (Vivian) Zipse of New Hampton, stepsister-in-law Ardella Morrison of Spring Hill, Florida, sister-in-laws Martha Knutson Hoelter of San Francisco, California and Lora Knutson Zeinun of Nogalas, Arizona.

Dave’s grandchildren include Tyler, Conner, and Carson Markle, step- grandchildren Laurie (Joe) Darnell, Alyssa Tommingo, Bobby (Erin) Boerschel, Becky (Jeremy) Bahe. There are also numerous nieces and nephews. He shared a birthday with special grandnephew Hunter Carey, son of Scott and Lori (Markle) Carey of New Hampton.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his first wife, and a sister, Annabell Rowe Henderson.

Scott H. McInroy, 43, of Jacksonville, Fla., died May 2, 2008, at his home in Jacksonville. Private family memorial services for Scott McInroy will be held at a later date.

Scott Howard McInroy was born July 1, 1964, at Charles City, the son of Lenard and Marilyn (Alden) McInroy. He graduated from the Charles City High School and from Hawkeye Tech Community College with an Associates Degree in Graphic Design. He also attended NIACC with additional course work. Scott worked at the Charles City Comprehensive Systems, Des Moines JuvenileDetention Center, Airborn Express in Atlanta, Hershal Harrington Lighting Studio in Atlanta, Carousel Dentistry in Chapel Hills, N.C.Home Center in Jacksonville, Fla. His interests included painting, drawing, cooking, baking, dancing, playing tennis and softball, weight lifting, spending time with family and friends and restoring furniture. Scott became one of the leading U.S. restorers of carousel horses while working at Hershel Harrington Lighting Studios. Dale A. Weiler

Dale A. Weiler, 93, of Charles City, died Sunday, May 4, 2008, at Manner Care in Waterloo.

Funeral services for Dale Weiler will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Congregational Church in Charles City. Pastor Phil Corr will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

The family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Wednesday.

Dale Alton Weiler was born September, 18, 1914, at Arlington, the son of Jess and Jessie (Thompson) Weiler. He graduated from the Charles City High School. On January 14, 1939 he was united in marriage to Theresa Eckoff in Waterloo. Theresa died in 1973. He later married Leda Hennick Galloway on October 19, 1974, at the First Congregational Church in Charles City. Leda died in 2001. Along with farming Dale retired from White / Oliver Farm after 37 years as a tool and die maker. He was a member of the First Congregational Church, the Knights of Pythias, and the U.A.W. His interests included current events, playing cards, listening to music, traveling, farming, his membeship in the Knights of Pythias and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Living family members include his daughter, Karla (Don) Hartman of Evensdale; two grandchildren, Marie (Doug) Frenz of Fort Madison and Russell (Ronda) Boekemeier of Rockford; three great grandchildren, Anthony and Stephanie Frenz and Curtis Boekemeier; two nieces, Sandra Figi of Waterloo and Sandra Stoeber of Calif.; and four nephews, Jan Figi of Westgate, Alan Fluhrer of Calif., Gary Fluhrer of Seattle, Wash. and Randy Stoeber of Calif.

Anies Hillson

Anies Hillson, 81, of Charles City, died Monday, May 12, 2008, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Anies Hillson will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries, pastor, and Reverend Brian Shepley will concelebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday where there will be a Rosary recited at 4:30 p.m. and a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m.

Anies Clara DeMets Hillson was born February 10, 1927, at Ellendale, Minn. the daughter of Achiel and Bertha (DeJonkere) DeMets. She graduated from Austin High School at Austin, Minn. On June 3, 1948, she was united in marriage to Donald Hillson at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin, Minn. In 1949 they moved to Charles City. From 1945 to 1948 Anies was employed with Federated Mutual Insurance in Owatonna, Minn. and from 1968 to 1989 she worked in the food service program at the Charles City Community Schools. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Saint Catherine Circle and Rosary Society. Anies and Donald loved to fish, spending summer vacations from 1967-2001 at Lake Kabetogama in northern Minnesota. She loved baking and doing crafts; crocheting afghans and doing plastic canvas Christmas ornaments and many other things. Anies always looked forward to spending time with her family and sharing their lives together. She will be remembered as a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Living family members include four children, Tom (Glenda) Hillson of Ames, Steve (Joan) Hillson of Owasso, Okla., David (Cynthia) Hillson of Mooresville, N.C. and Denise (Steve) Long of Alameda, Calif.; 9 grandchildren, Tom (Maggie) Hillson, Angela, Elizabeth, Jonathan, Katie, Kristin, Hannah and Abbey Hillson and Max Long; and a great grandson, Chance Hillson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald, on January 3, 2008; two brothers, Maurice and Leo DeMets; and two sisters, Laura Becker and Bernice Weum.

Mary Helen Clark

Mary Helen Clark, age 90 of Redwood Fall, MN formerly of Nashua, died Wednesday afternoon April 30, 2008, at the Redwood Area Hospital in Redwood Falls, MN.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Nashua.

Mary was born April 18, 1918, in Portsmouth, Ohio, the daughter of Kaleb and Julia Saleba. She was a 1939 graduate of Mount Mercy School of Nursing in Portsmouth, Ohio. She met her husband while working at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Clayton W. Clark M.D. and Mary were united in marriage October 29, 1942, in Fort Worth, Texas. She returned to Portsmouth when Clay was sent to the Pacific after serving at several bases in Texas. The couple came to Nashua, Iowa after the war in 1946 on a temporary basis and stayed for 62 years.

Mary was a stay at home mom who was actively involved in the lives of her family. She was a great cook, with an awesome chocolate cookie recipe. She was a member of the Nashua United Methodist Church and the U.M.C. Women for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, worked as a substitute school nurse and at the Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. She also worked in her husband's medical clinic when needed.

Mary was an avid golfer until the age of 86. She continued to play bridge, bingo and slot machines until her death. Travel was also a large part of her life; camping trips and international travel. Mary had just celebrated her 90th birthday in Nashua with a large gathering of family and friends. Knowing that in Heaven it's always a great day to be on the golf course, that the sun is shining warmly and Mary is in the presence of her loved ones comforts the family.

She is survived by her four children, John (Barbara) Clark of Dallas, TX, Robert (Deborah) Clark of Frisco, TX, Marcia Todd of Kansas City, MO and Julia (Michael) Salmon of Redwood Falls, MN; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Grace Saleba of Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her husband, C. W. Clark on June 7, 1981; and a granddaughter, Mary Todd.

Lester G. Hirsch, 87, of Charles City, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at the Floyd County Medical Center, in Charles City.

Funeral services for Lester Hirsch will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor LaVonne Kaasa of the West St. Charles United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. Military Honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Lester George Hirsch was born March 11, 1921, in rural Charles City, the son of Charles and Maggie (Heitz) Hirsch. He received his education in Charles City and graduated in 1939.
