Robert H. Handt


Robert Herman Handt, 87, of 508 7th Avenue in Charles City, passed away Thursday, February 4, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa in Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main Street in Charles City on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Military rites will be conducted at the church following the service. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Bob was born on November 21, 1922 in rural Floyd County, the son of Herman and Karoline (Troge) Handt. He served in the United States Army during World War II, earning a Bronze Star for his service in New Guinea and the Philippines. On December 18, 1949, he married Wilma Koebrick at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Bob worked at the Oliver Tractor Plant-White Motor Corporation in Charles City for 38 years, retiring in 1980. Prior to suffering a stroke in 2002, Bob enjoyed playing euchre at the Elks Club, was a longtime member of Wildwood Golf Course, played many of the area golf courses with his son, Mike, and especially looked forward to the annual fishing trips to Mille Lacs and other Minnesota lakes with his brothers, Willis and Dick, and other relatives and friends. He also enjoyed catching small mouth bass and walleyes locally in the Cedar and Shell Rock Rivers. He was also an avid ice fisherman and had a talent for catching crappies. Following the stroke, he was still able to, and thoroughly enjoyed mowing lawns with his son, who operated a lawn care business.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Florence Field and Helen Kozak; brothers, Chuck Handt and Dick Handt; brothers-in-law, Emory Field and Boris Kozak; and sister-in-law, Helen Handt.

Those left to honor his memory include his loving wife of 60 years, Wilma; son, Mike Handt of Mason City; daughter, Teri (David) Nelson of Medina, MN; grandchildren, Kristi and Matthew Nelson, both of LaCrosse, WI; brother, Willis (Shielah) Handt of Mason City; sister-in-law, Lolly Handt of Charles City; a special niece, Sandy (Ken) Kline of Mason City; good friends, Robert and Diann Riha of Charles City; many nieces and nephews; and not to be overlooked is Bob’s dear little companion, Scamp, who knew when he was not feeling well and spent many hours curled up at Bob’s feet while he napped on the couch.

Marian Wood


Marian Wood, 94, of Marble Rock, died Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at Port Charles Assisted Living in Charles City.

Funeral services for Marian Wood will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City. Pastor Gary Van Wert will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Greene.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday and an hour prior to the services at the church on Monday.

Marian Elaine Marsh Belknap Wood was born February 8, 1915, in Greene, the daughter of Ira and Linda (Fischer) Marsh. She attended country school, graduating in 1933 from Greene High School. On August 12, 1937, Marian was united in marriage to Marion Belknap at Austin, Minn. They farmed east of Greene until Marion’s death on May 3, 1958. To this union three children were born. For a number of years Marian and Verle Townseley ran the Corner Dress Shop in Greene. Marian married Gordon Wood on September 8, 1962 at the United Methodist Church in Greene. Gordon died on May 12, 1987. Marian was a devoted member of the United Methodist Church in Greene and Marble Rock. She served in various offices of the church, was organist and choir member. Marian was also a 25 year member of the United Methodist Women. She was an excellent cook, hard working farm wife and loving mother and grandmother. Marian was a truly special person who will be missed very much.

Living family members include twin daughters, Kay (Franklin) Troutner of Nashua and Karen (Noel) Mizell of St. Charles, Mo.; five grandchildren, Tricia (Tim) Schultz, Teria Troutner, Tina (Jon) Schmidt, Tammy Maygar and Todd Mizell; three great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Dee Belknap of Eldora and her three children, Roger, Marsha and Rodney; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; a son, Francis Belknap on September 11, 2007; a son-in-law, Noel Mizell on October 5, 2008; two brothers, Clinton and Dwight Marsh; and two sisters, Lillian Marsh and Harriet Scheidler.

Oliver W. Hughes


Oliver W. Hughes, 93, of Charles City, died Wednesday evening, January 27, 2010, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Memorial services for Oliver Hughes will be held 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Phil Corr of the First Congregational Church will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date.

The family will greet friends from 1:30 p.m. until service time at the funeral home on Monday.

Oliver Winfield Hughes was born January 6, 1917, in Hudson Township, Wis., the son of Almon J. and Ruby (Benoy) Hughes. He graduated from the Roberts High School in Roberts, Wis. From 1942 to 1945, Oliver served in the United States Army. In November of 1943, he was united in marriage to Mary Genevieve Deere at Chicago. They later divorced. Oliver was a master carpenter, cabinet maker and for 20 years he was employed at the University of Minnesota as Senior Construction Supervisor. He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, and Carpenter’s Union of Minnesota. His interests included furniture building, playing bridge, ballroom dancing, reading biographical history, traveling, playing the organ and trumpet and photography.

Living family members include his five children, Sheilah Dedrickson (Jack) McClain of Charles City, Barbara (Paul) Williams of Orange Beach, Ala., Pamela (Tom) Ernst of St. Paul, Minn., Norma (John) Stevenson of Eagan, Minn. and Almon John Hughes III of Burnsville, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and many cousins; nieces; and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents; daughter, Lesley Hughes; two sisters, Maxine Baier and Marcella Hughes; and two brothers, Wendell “Jiggs” Hughes and Lesley Hughes.

Robert L. “Roy” Hume


Robert L. “Roy” Hume, 83, of Charles City, died Tuesday morning, January 26, 2010, at the 9th St. Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Memorial services for Robert Hume will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastor David Werges and Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

The family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church on Saturday.

Robert Leroy Hume was born February 2, 1926, at Charles City, the son of Robert A. and Gladys Irene (Waters) Hume, the fourth of eleven children. He received his education at McIntire and later received his GED. Roy proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. Roy met Ann Mackamul in Charles City and they were married at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church on September 1, 1946. Roy worked at Salsbury Laboratories, Oliver Corporation, Charles City Western Railroad and the Charles City High School. Both Roy and Ann were instrumental leaders at the Charles City Senior Center where Roy had served as president for many years and managed the Senior Center bingo. He was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, American Legion and V.F.W. Roy enjoyed hunting and fishing. For many years he built a variety of grandfather, mantel and wall clocks for family and friends. His greatest joy, however, was spending time with his family and friends. The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Schrodt, Hospice of North Iowa and the staff of 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home for the loving care they gave to Roy.

Living family members include his wife of 63 years, Ann Hume of Charles City; two daughters, Marcia (Jack) Taylor of Marble Rock and Cynthia (Lee) Chambers of Robins; four grandchildren, Michael (Gina) Taylor, Wendy (John) Dearth, Pamela (Ronn) Datema and Robert (Jill) Chambers; a great grandson, Douglas Taylor; four brothers, Albert (Edith) Hume of Ark., James (Cecelia) Hume and William (Diane) Hume both of Tex. and Lawrence (Marie) Hume of Mo.; and three sisters, Marie Herman of Minn., Margaret Lubbert of Riceville and Laura (Joe) Fal of Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John Hume; and two sisters, Bernice Miller and Doris Fee.

William “Bill” Cole


William “Bill” Cole, 91, of Charles City, died Tuesday, January 26, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City after a long illness.

A funeral Mass for Bill Cole will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. The Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. There will be a flag presentation and taps by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the St. Frances De Sales Catholic Cemetery in Ossian. Monsignor Cletus J. Hawes will officiate.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday where the Knights of Columbus will lead the Rosary at 4 p.m. and a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue an hour before the Mass at the church on Saturday.

William Cole was born September 8, 1918, at Postville, the son of Harry D. and Rose A. (Shaffer) Cole. He graduated from the Postville High School in 1936. Bill served in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945. On September 19, 1944, he was united in marriage to Kathryn Becker at the St. Frances De Sales Catholic Church in Ossian. He was employed as an agent for the Milwaukee Railroad from 1941 until his retirement in 1980. While living in Ossian, Bill also owned a TV repair business. Bill was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, V.F.W., past American Legion finance officer, Life Member of the National Rifle Association, American Radio Relay League, various amateur radio clubs, Rail Road Transportation Communication Union, 168th Infantry Headquarters Committee Association, 34th Infantry Division Association and the Quarter Century Wireless Association. His interests included woodworking, reading, crossword puzzles, gardening, Ham Radio, hunting and trap shooting.

Living family members include his wife, Kathryn Cole of Charles City; two children, Karen (Mark) Tyler of Cedar Rapids and William Cole of St. Louis, Mo.; four grandchildren, Christopher (Charity) Tyler, Sara Tyler, Brandon and Jordan Cole; one great granddaughter, Taylor Monnahan; sister, Jane Walsh of Westchester, Ill; sister-in-law, Doris Cole of Decorah; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harry Cole; and sister, Margaret Heaverlo.

Evelyn B. Schrage


Evelyn B. Schrage, 66, of Charles City, died Monday, January 25, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Evelyn Beryl Gerber was born December 29, 1943, at Austin, Minn., the daughter of Evert and Christine Beryl (Thompson) Gerber. She graduated from the Rockford High School and the La’ James Beauty School. On November 4, 1962, she was united in marriage to Robert D. Schrage at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, rural Osage. Evelyn was employed at several area nursing homes as a dietary supervisor and then at Mercy as billing technician. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford and Ruth Circle at church. Her interests included gardening, cooking, baking, sewing, shopping and attending her grandchildren’s events.

Living family members include her four daughters, Carmen (Bill) Staudt of Rockford, Lisa Lines of Rockford, Judy (Steve) DeGraw of Sheffield and Suzanne (Brian) Ross of Charles City; 12 grandchildren, Alisha, Nate and Nicholas Staudt, Chris, Kyle and Cole Lines, Josh, Mackenzie and Kristina DeGraw and Macy, Madison and Brianna Ross; sister, Marlene Johnson of Plymouth; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Hayden Dale Stowe was born January 10, 2010, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Wendell L. Hobert


Wendell L. Hobert, 89, of Charles City, died Thursday, January 14, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Wendell Lester Hobert was born May 15, 1920, at Charles City, the son of Lester and Lulu (Pfeiffer) Hobert. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1938. On September 28, 1941, he was united in marriage to Phyllis “Fern” Newton at Charles City. From 1942 to 1946, he served in the United States Navy. After WWII, Wendell farmed and did electrical work for local contractors until 1975 when he started Hobert Electric. He was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W., Charles City Patriotic Association, and Care Review Committee for Iowa Nursing Homes. Wendell was active as a leader for the Boy Scouts and the Electrical Board for Charles City. His interests included trout fishing, mushroom hunting, gardening, traveling and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Living family members include his six children, Linda (Robert) Milton of Phoenix, Ariz., Robert (Judy) Hobert of Penn Valley, Calif., Lester (Linda) Hobert of Charles City, Mary (Jerry) Cross of Forest City, Edward (Teresa) Hobert of Charles City and Aaron Hobert and fiancée Diane Shearman of Charles City; 14 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; sister, Dorothy (Don) Swinton of Waverly; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sister, Phyllis Mae Hobert; and a nephew, Mike Swinton.

Teri Ross


Teri Ross, 61, of 804 N. Federal Avenue in Mason City died Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa.

Teri was born on June 10, 1948 in Charles City, the daughter of Marvin and Rosella (Arndt) Ross. She attended the Colwell School and graduated from Charles City High in 1967. She moved to Mason City in 1968. Teri was employed in the MIS Department at Mercy Medical Center for over 30 years, a job which she enjoyed very much. She was very family-oriented and enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews.

Those left to cherish her memory include her siblings, Frances Berchtold, Roger Ross, Carol (Jerry) Meader, Larry (Jenny) Ross, Vicki (Bruce) Inman and Jimmie (Gwen) Ross; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Marvin Ross.

Dr. Kenneth P. Steimel


Dr. Kenneth P. Steimel, 78, of Charles City, died Monday evening, January 11, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Dr. Ken Steimel will be held 10:00 A.M. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Monsignor Walter Brunkan, Monsignor Stanley Hayek and Father Carl Ries will concelebrate the Mass. There will be a flag presentation and taps by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit. Burial will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Eagle Center.

Kenneth Peter Steimel was born September 10, 1931, at Gilbertville the son of Oscar P. and Frances M. (Weber) Steimel. He graduated from St. Mary of Mt. Carmel High School in 1949, Loras College (Cum Laude) in 1954 and Creighton University Medical School in 1958. On July 7, 1956, he was united in marriage to Honore Jones at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg. In 1959, he served his internship at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, Minn. Dr. Ken began his practice in Osage with Dr. Robert Huber. From 1960 to 1962, he served in the United States Air Force as an Aviation Medical Examiner, while stationed at San Antonio, Texas. After his time in the Air Force, Dr. Steimel returned to Charles City to join Dr. Huber again as a family practice physician until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of the Iowa Medical Association, Floyd County Medical Association, American Medical Association, American Legion, Izaak Walton League and a 33 year charter member of the National Fishing Hall of Fame. Ken dearly loved his time in the North woods where he could truly relax. Other memberships included Knights of Columbus and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where he trained altar servers. His interests included spring and fall fishing, hunting, summer gardening, traveling somewhere tropical in the winter and “hanging out on the beach”, reading outdoor adventure magazines and eating fried chicken.

Living family members include his wife of 53 years, Honore Steimel of Charles City; five daughters, Sheila (Tom) Ossowski of Anoka, Minn., Jeannine (Craig) Fisher of Charles City, Susan Steimel and special friend, Todd Virchow of Garner, Madonna (Rusty) Weiss of Kasota, Minn. and Kari (Brendan) Foust of Rochester, Minn.; 14 grandchildren, Dan (Katie) Ossowski, Pete (Andrea) Ossowski, Jake Ossowski, Joe Fisher, Amy Fisher, Katlyn Fisher, Sara Hoover, Sabrina Hoover, Jestine Weiss, Kaelan Weiss, Antonia Weiss, Teagan Weiss, Mikella Foust and Nonie Foust; brother, Don (Mary) Steimel of Newhall; three sisters, Pat (Dr. Joe) Monaco of Wausau, Wis., Marge Sauve` of Chandler, Ariz. and Sharon Davis of Waterloo; many nieces; nephews; cousins; special cousin, Earl (Miriam) Steimel of Eagle Center; and two sisters-in-law, Kathleen Jones of Cedar Rapids and Charlotte (Mike) Mack of Waterloo.

Mattie Kelly

Mattie Kelly, 84, of Charles City, died Sunday, January 10, 2010, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Mattie Mae Burgess Kelly was born April 11, 1925, at Kingstree, S.C., the daughter of William and Sarah (Oliver) Burgess. She received her education at Kingstree. Mattie married Carl Kelly in 1952. She worked for many years as a housekeeper in nursing homes.

Living family members include four children, Carlean Burgess of Lubbock, Tex., Leonard Kelly of Brooklyn, N.Y., Allen (Brenda) Burgess of Osage and Michael Burgess of Brooklyn, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Robert Burgess; a brother and a sister.

Lucille Clapp


Lucille Clapp, 90, of Charles City, died Sunday, January 10, 2010, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Lucille Edna Beckwith Clapp was born April 17, 1919, at Charles City, the daughter of Glen and Mary (Tynan) Beckwith. She received her education at the Immaculate Conception School. On November 27, 1934 she was united in marriage to Stanley Clapp. Over the years she was a housekeeper in various homes at Charles City. Lucille was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Catherine Circle, Moose Lodge and Ladies of the Moose. She enjoyed dancing, sewing and house cleaning.

Living family members include two children, Merlyn (Margaret) Clapp of Charles City and Carol (John “Jay” Caneff) Patterson-Caneff of Hastings, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Heather (Sam) Hanson, Jonathon (Liz) Patterson, Susan (Mort) David, Vernon (Tracey) Clapp, Mary Elin, Bertha (Mike) Lambright and Kevin (Tonya) Clapp; 16 great grandchildren; and several great-great grandchildren and many step grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on March 7, 1978; two sisters, Lola Harms and marvel Leon; and a brother, Donald Beckwith.

Lawrence “Bud” Lomison


Lawrence “Bud” Lomison, 91, of Charles City, died Friday, January 8, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Bud Lomison will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Debra Lincoln of the Colwell United Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Tuesday.

Lawrence Oliver Lomison was born August 1, 1918, at Waterloo, the son of Homer and Edith (Gumble) Lomison. He graduated in 1936 from East High in Waterloo. Bud worked at Rath Packing before serving in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater. In 1947 he moved north of Bassett where he farmed until 1984. On April 27, 1956, he was united in marriage to Maxine Sturdivant Rowley. In 1985, after his retirement, they moved to Charles City. He was a member of the Colwell United Church of Christ where he held various offices in the church, American Legion Auxiliary, Heritage Club, Senior Citizens, Charles City Twisters Square Dance Cllub and Marathon 500. Bud also served as a trustee in Deerfield Township. His interests included bowling, playing cards, dancing and woodworking. Over the years he did many odd jobs for his family and friends.

Living family members include two children, Shirley (Russell) Nordman and Kenneth Rowley both of Charles City; four grandchildren, Jeff (Melody) Nordman, Tim Rowley and special friend Becky, Denise (Brian) Kelly and Rachael (Barry) Kelly; six great grandchildren, Chase, Alex, Brianna, Alyssa and Spencer Kelly and Nicole (Travis) Hanaway; and two great great grandchildren, Levi Lindner and Halle Hanaway.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife on April 7, 2006; a daughter-in-law, Mary Rowley, and a sister, Dorothy Kline.

Albert “Whitey” Schultz


Albert “Whitey” Schultz, 86, formerly of Rockford, died Thursday, January 7, 2010 at the Nora Springs Care Center.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd Street SE in Mason City. Pastor Jim Turner of the Shell Rock First United Methodist Church will officiate. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, January 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in Park Cemetery in Nora Springs. Whitey was born on August 16, 1923 in Stillwater, OK, the son of Ernest and Dorothy (Schwade) Schultz. His family moved to Nora Springs when he was very young. Whitey graduated from Nora Springs and attended a semester of college at Upper Iowa University, before being drafted into the Army during World War II. He served for 27 months in the South Pacific, receiving a Bronze Star for his part in the Liberation of Luzon. Whitey was wounded during his serivice in the Pacific Islands. After returning home from the war, he was united in marriage to Shirley Symes on April 6, 1947. The couple made their home in Nora Springs. Shirley passed away in December of 1947. Whitey then met LaVon Schrage Brown and they were married on November 26, 1948. He would also begin his career with Lehigh Portland Cement in 1948, where he would be employed for nearly 30 years. He was a repairman, and also served as the President for the Cement, Lime and Gypsum Local Union 106 and was at one time the Regional Vice President for the union. Whitey and his family moved to an acreage in Rockford in 1959, where he operated a farm. LaVon passed away in February of 2003.

Whitey was very proud to his role in the NIAD Labor Counicl and his role in the Clear Lake Labor Day Dance and the scholarship program for deserving high school students. He was very active in his union, and his service earned him the honor of being in the Union Hall of Fame AFL-CIO. Throughout his entire life, Whitey developed into a master storyteller, always on the lookout for someone to tell his stories to. In his later years, he enjoyed playing cards and following the Women’s Pool League.

Whitey will be loved and missed by his many friends and family. Those left to honor his memory include his children, Virginia Brown of Charles City, Virgil (Claudia) Brown of New Concord, NC, Larry Schultz of Waverly, Dan (Sue) Schultz of Stillwater, MN, Mark (Beth) Schultz of Gales Ferry, CT, Duane (Jane) Schultz of Iowa Falls, Peggy Cheney of Indianola, and Ben (Valerie) Schultz of Des Moines; 24 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; sister, Irma Peterson; and brother, Fred Schultz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Shirley and LaVon; grandson, Doug Brown; sisters, Rosie Lee and Bertha Swartwood; and brother, Herman Schultz.

Laura Boggess


Laura Boggess, 70, of Charles City, died Thursday, January 7, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services for Laura Boggess will be held 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Temple Baptist Church. Pastor Rick Fessel will officiate. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Laura Jean Timmons Boggess was born May 22, 1939, in Floyd County, the daughter of Jesse and Bernice (Jones) Timmons. She attended Charles City High School and later received her GED. On June 16, 1956, she was united in marriage to Earl Boggess. Laura accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior after listening to Back to the Bible. This made a profound change in her life. She was always concerned about her family’s salvation and relationship to Christ. Laura was a member of Temple Baptist Church. Her interest in others was made evident by her cooking for them at various times and sending greeting cards. Laura’s family was always important to her and she took every opportunity to share her life, love and Savior with them.

Living family members include her husband, Earl Boggess of Charles City; four children, LeRoy (Kellie Ann) Boggess of Charles City, Rod (Sharon) Boggess and Jeri (Dan) Marzen both of Grinnell, and Rick (Deane) Boggess of West Des Moines; seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and a sister, Myrna (Darryl) Sletten of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Sherrry Marzen; and a brother, Russell Timmons.

Eugene “Gene” Parks


Eugene “Gene” Parks, 74, of Charles City, died Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at his residence.

Funeral services for Gene Parks will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Bachman of the First Wesleyan Church will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Saturday.

Eugene Parks was born March 16, 1935, at Alexander, the son of Wesley and Marjorie (Cross) Parks. He attended school at Hampton and graduated from Hamilton Business College. Gene served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. On March 1, 1957, he was united in marriage to Marlys Howell at Belmond. Over the years he worked as an accountant and then as a circulation manager for the Des Moines Register. They moved to Charles City in 1963 where he worked as circulation manager for the Charles City Press. In 1966 he joined with his brothers in Parks Construction, building apartments and residential housing in Hampton and Charles City. Gene purchased the Union 76 gas station in 1977 and remodeled it into the first convenience store in Charles City and then expanded to several convenience stores in the area. He also became a marketer for Union 76 petroleum products. He was a member of the American Legion. Gene will always be remembered as a person who enjoyed his work and doing his very best at everything. He always looked forward to sharing his love and life with his family.

Living family members include his wife, Marlys Parks of Charles City; four children, Pamela (Byron) Lessin of Charles City, Perry (Kathy) Parks of Belmond, Scott (Angela) Parks of Charles City, and Jerry (Katherine) Parks of Las Vegas, Nev.; 13 grandchildren, Tony and Sara Lessin, Gabby, Alex, Andrew (Becky), Hannah, Justin, Jordon, Brynn, Brandon, Jeridan, Maisy and Jackson Parks; a great granddaughter, Alivia Parks; three brothers, Don Parks of Hampton, Stan Parks of Des Moines, and Wesley (Pauline) Parks of Sheffield; and a sister, Maryanne Marchellino of Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Bernard Higgins and Morris Parks.

Sara Jane (Ott) Koehler

Sara Jane (Ott) Koehler, 43, of Eden Prairie, Minn., formerly of Charles City, passed away on Sunday, December 27, 2009, at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minn. after battling cancer for the last year and a half.

Memorial services for Sara Koehler will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City. Associate Pastor Sam Mack will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date.

The family will greet friends at the church from 10 a.m. until service time.

Sara Jane (Ott) Koehler was born June 11, 1966, in Charles City, the daughter of Roger and Ann (Kepple) Ott. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1984 and had a BA in Graphic Design from Iowa State University and a MBA from the University of Dayton. Most recently Sara worked at the Reader’s Digest Association, Eagan, Minn., as the Design Director for The Family Handyman magazine. In addition to being a talented artist, she was also a great musician playing both the violin and piano. She was passionate about animal rights, donating regularly to local shelters, and dearly loved her pets over the years, most recently cats Hershey and Casper. The greatest joy in her life has been her daughter Sophie, who follows in her mother’s footsteps in creative and musical talent. Sara loved the outdoors, cycling (went on RAGBRAI many times), hiking, cross-country skiing, sledding, and mushroom hunting. In general, she was enthusiastic about life and always upbeat. Even during her chemotherapy treatments, it was hard to get her to slow down.

Sara is survived by husband Scott Koehler and their daughter Sophie of Eden Prairie, Minn.; mother Ann (Ott) Schneckloth and husband Jon of Charles City; and sister Margo (Ott) Farnsworth and husband Chris of Oakham, Mass.

She was preceded in death by father Roger Dean Ott.

Ernest Jeffries


Ernest Jeffries, 81 of 4 Colony Court #3, Osage died Friday, December 25, 2009 at Faith Lutheran Home, Osage, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm, Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 833 Ash St., Osage. Officiating will be the Rev. Roy Ott. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be in Osage Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Hospice of New Hampton. Earnest F. Jeffries was born on January 22, 1928 in Mitchell County the son of Earl and Gustava “Johnson” Jeffries. His early education was in Osage. On April 15, 1946 he joined the Army and served at Guam and the Philippines during WWII and was honorable discharged as a Corporal on October 15, 1947. He was united in marriage to Joan Faber on September 29, 1954 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. To this union was born three children. Since 1955 they lived in Charles City, moving in their later years to Tampa, Florida and then coming full circle back to Osage five years ago. Earnie started his work career as a truck driver delivering eggs for Cedar Valley Produce and then became a heavy equipment operator for 25 years with Triad Construction in Charles City. The last 15 years of his career he operated equipment for the City of Charles City retiring about 1994. Through the years they were members of Our Saviour’s Lutheran and then St. John Evangelical Lutheran in Charles City and then when moving back to Osage again became members of Our Saviour’s. He enjoyed tending his vegetable garden, camping with his family in and around Charles City and spending time with his grandchildren. While in Tampa he became a Buccaneer Football Fan. They also were regular volunteers with the Salvation Army in Charles City. Earnie was known to look at a problem, think about it and then fix just about anything.

Those thankful in sharing in Ernest’s life include his wife of ff years, Joan, his three children Connie and her husband Alvin Blackburn, Zion, IL; Kathy and her husband David Logan, Round Rock, TX; and Kevin and his wife Jamey Jeffries, Tampa, FL; six grandchildren Jenny (Mike) Bateman, Marshal (Danielle) Blackburn, Stephanie (Nick) Valentin, Chris Logan, Patty and Sarah Jeffries, two great grandchildren Evan and Alyssa Bateman, his sister Nancy Nutt, Coralville, IA; both brothers, Orland (Nancy) Jeffries, Iowa City, IA; Francis (Muriel) Jeffries, Naples, Fla, and several nieces and nephews.

Norma Hutchison, 52, of Charles City, formerly of St. Smith, Ark., died Tuesday, December 22, 2009, at her home.

Norma Jean Martin Hutchison was born March 25, 1957, at Charles City, the daughter of Dean and Elsie (Allen) Martin. She graduated from Charles City High School. In 1975 she was united in marriage to John Hutchison. They later divorced. Over the years she worked at HyVee and Walmart in the Charles City and Ft. Smith area. Norma was a member of the Evangel Temple in Ft. Smith. One of the things Norma enjoyed most was driving, no matter where she was going. She looked forward to spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Living family members include two children, Holly (Brian) Sachen of Charles City and James (Sharyl) Hutchison of Ft. Smith, Ark.; six grandchildren; her mother, Elsie Martin of Charles City; two brothers, William (Lynn) Martin of Memphis, Tenn. and Steven (Terry) Martin of Ft. Bernadine “Bernie” Baldwin, 85, of Charles City, died Saturday, December 19, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Bernie Baldwin will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. The Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. followed by a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service. Visitation will continue an hour before the Mass at the Church on Tuesday.

Bernadine June Bonsall was born June 24, 1924, in Mitchell County, the daughter of Roy and Pearl (Clingman) Bonsall. She graduated from the Charles City High School in 1943. On November 29, 1945, she was united in marriage to Harlan Baldwin at the Immaculate Conception Church. Bernie was employed at Oliver / White Farm for 29 years in the Payroll Department. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Anthony’s Circle, Women of the Moose and the V.F.W. Her interests included playing cards, collecting teapots, baking, cooking meals for her family, especially potato salad, visiting with people and spending time with her family.

Living family members include her three children, Dennis (Sue) Baldwin of Davenport, Gregory Baldwin of Davenport and Janice (Randy) Gilbert of Floyd; nine granddaughters; 12 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Carol “Jean” Mayfield


Carol “Jean” Mayfield, 74, of Charles City, died Sunday, December 13, 2009, at her residence.

Carol Dollman Mayfield was born December 10, 1935, at Platte, S.D., the daughter of Roy and Blanche (Ferris) Dollman. She graduated in 1953 from Platte High School and then from LaJames Beauty School. On September 27, 1954, she married Willis Sterk. They later divorced. Jean then married John Mayfield on May 30, 1981 at Charles City. Jean was proprietor of Jean’s Imperial Hair Fashions in Charles City for 42 years. She always enjoyed working with the public. Her interests included fishing, camping and gardening.

Living family members include her husband, John Mayfield of Charles City; five children, Brenda (Charles) Sterk Gray of Cedar Falls, Sharon (Scott Cook) Sterk Johnston of Charles City, Dwayne (Katrina) Sterk of Vidor, Tex., Margo (Tom) Mayfield Lind of Fort Pierce. Roger Vote


Roger Vote, 64, of Charles City, died Saturday, December 12, 2009, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo following complications from surgery.

Funeral services for Roger Vote will be held 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Floyd Community Center in Floyd. Steve Quintus will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date.

The family will greet friends at the Floyd Community Center from 2:30 p.m. until service time on Saturday.

Roger Lee Vote was born January 3, 1945, at Fort Dodge, the son of Clarence and Evelyn (Erickson) Vote. He graduated from the Riceville High School in 1963. On November 25, 1967 he was united in marriage to Mary Mans at Goodhue, Minn. He worked many years for Iowa Drainage, Inc. of Sheffield. Roger became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1974 and shared his faith with others up to the day before his final hospitalization. He always looked forward to the times he could share his love and life with his family. Both he and Mary enjoyed entertaining at their home. Roger enjoyed playing golf, hunting, fishing and watching football.

Living family members include his wife, Mary of Charles City; five children, Michael (Beverly) Vote of Waterloo, Cindy (Demetrius) Robison of Rochester, Minn., Sherry (Adam) Madsen of Denver, Colo., Rebecca (Eric) Bolinski of Charles City, and Laura (Corey) Thomas of Charles City; four grandchildren, Ethan and Zachariah Vote, Kiana Robison and Baruch Bolinski; a sister, Anna (John) Padget of Waterloo; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers, Bernard, Merlyn, Clarence and Bruce Vote.

Herbert W. Schinnow

Herbert W. Schinnow, 92, of Charles City, died on Saturday, December 12, 2009, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. Herb donated his body to the Mayo Foundation.

A memorial service for Herbert Schinnow will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 22, 2009, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Gary Van Wert will officiate.

The family will greet friends at the church from 10 a.m. until service time.

Herbert William Schinnow was born on September 22, 1917, in Mason City, the son of Amil and Bertha (Rehwinkel) Schinnow. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1935. On September 11, 1937, Herb married Bernadine Moore. During World War II, Herb, Bernadine and son Terry moved to Oregon for work in the shipyards. He also proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. Bernadine passed away on April 15, 1975. On September 25, 1978, he married Rosemary Osier. She passed away in August 28, 2008. Herb worked at Oliver/White Farm Corporation for 31 years, retiring in 1977. He was a lifelong fisherman and he and Rosemary owned a home on the Mississippi River for many years. He enjoyed gardening and sharing what he grew. Herb loved his family and friends and will be deeply missed.

Herb is survived by his son, Gene Schinnow, of Joice; a daughter, Laura Schinnow (Ron Palumbo) of Ames; two step-sons, Mike Osier of Winter Garden, Fla. and Chris (LeeAnn) Osier of Chariton; 10 grandchildren, Tracy (Darla) Schinnow, Valorie Byngelson and her fiancé Verlan Jensen, Stephanie Schinnow, Robin Schinnow, Elizabeth Palumbo, Shannon (Chris) Nesbit, Stephanie Osier, Mike DeJean, Jordan Osier and Lauren Davis; 4 great- grandchildren, Alison Butterfield, Nicholas Schinnow, Nathan Bryngelson, Justin Schinnow; and a great-great- grandson, James.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wives; his eldest son, Terry Schinnow; and 2 brothers, Emmett and Robert Schinnow.

Ruby Jaeger


Ruby Jaeger, 85, of Charles City, died Friday, December 11, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Ruby Jaeger will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastors Dennis Niezwaag and David Werges will officiate. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday. Visitation will continue Tuesday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Ruby Evelyn Jaeger was born October 15, 1924, in Floyd County, the daughter of Harry and Clara Bell (Armstrong) Sonne. She graduated from the Colwell School and worked for several years at Woolworth’s in Charles City. On December 9, 1945, she was united in marriage to Claire Jaeger. They farmed all their lives north of Charles City. Ruby was baptized at the Colwell United Church of Christ and attended Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Double Dozen Club. Her interests included embroidery, cooking, canning and flower gardening. She will be remembered for her spectacular potato salad. Ruby thoroughly enjoyed her family; especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and always looked forward to their dropping in for a visit.

James Nixt

James Nixt, 57, of Greene, died Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

A funeral Mass for James Nixt will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Greene. Monsignor Walter Brunkan will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Saint Mary's Cemetery at Greene.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday where there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. followed by the reciting of the Rosary. Visitation will continue Saturday at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

James Louis Nixt was born November 18, 1952, at Charles City, the son of Paul and Mary Lou (Scofield) Nixt. He graduated from Greene Community High School in 1971 and attended North Iowa Community College in Mason City. In 1977 he married Angela Nauman. They later divorced. James farmed for several years and then went into carpentry. He was a member of Saint Mary's Catholic Church. James enjoyed hunting, playing practical jokes and spending time with his friends.

Living family members include a daughter, Anna (Brent) Clausen of Sheffield; a grandson, Gavin Clausen; three brothers, George (Susan) Nixt of Greene, Stephen (Geri) Nixt of St. Michael, Minn. and Michael (Ruth) Nixt of Greene; two sisters, Sharon (John) Daub of Mason City and Terry (Merv) Menken of Greene; many nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and great nephews.

Elaine Federhart


Elaine Federhart, 93, of Charles City, died Saturday, December 5, 2009, at the 9th
Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Elaine Federhart will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Congregational Church. Pastor Phil Corr will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Visitation will continue Friday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Elaine G. Bennett Federhart was born May 9, 1916, at Sioux City, the daughter of Miles and Edna (Sterling) Bennett. She graduated from Central High School in Sioux City in 1934. On May 15, 1938 Elaine was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart Hugo Federhart at the Mayflower Congregational Church in Sioux City. Elaine worked for a Sioux City insurance company during WW II while Hugo served in the United States Army. In 1976 they moved to Charles City where they would spend the rest of their lives together. She was a member of the First Congregational Church where she shared her love of music as a member of the choir, the Women's Fellowship and the Tuesday Morning Bible Study. Elaine was also a P.E.O. sister and had been a Pink Lady at the Floyd County Medical Center. She also appeared on stage more than once with the Dakota County Players, a theater group she helped to found, both in musical and comic roles. Elaine will be remembered for her cooking skills including her excellent pie making. They also enjoyed camping out as a family where she became an expert in the use of a Coleman gas camp stove.

Living family members include her husband, Hugo Federhart of Charles City; two sons, James (Linda) Federhart of Madison, Wis. and Douglas (Stuart Holland) Federhart of Minneapolis, Minn.; two granddaughters, Lisa (Travis) Janssen and Katy (Rob) Yang; and an adoptive grandson, Pablo Lopez Arrieta.

Betty A. Larson


Betty A. Larson, 80, of Charles City, died Saturday afternoon, December 5, 2009, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Due to the inclement weather the memorial Mass for Betty Larson will be rescheduled for 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Betty Ann Dugan was born July 26, 1929, at Meyer, the daughter of Charles and Gertrude (Meyer) Dugan. She graduated from the Immaculate Conception High School and later attended the University of Iowa School of library science. On September 22, 1951, she was united in marriage to Calvin Larson. She was employed at the Charles City Library, manager of the Charles City Country Club and catering. Betty was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Jude Circle and Rosary
Society. Her interests included reading, bus trips, bowling and family gatherings.

Living family members include her husband, Calvin Larson of Charles City; three children, Christine (John) Gohr of Charles City, Tim (Sheryl) Larson of Omaha, Nebr. and Teresa (Brian) Carr of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren, Charles (Danielle) Gohr, Crecia Gohr and fiance, Jason Brooks, Adam Bryngelson, Tim (Melissa) Bryngelson, Maria Shipley, Jeff (Tara) Carr and Christina Carr and her fiance Tyson Roberts; five

Madeline B. Jacobs


Madeline B. Jacobs, 90, of Charles City, died Sunday, November 29, 2009 at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home.

A funeral service will be held at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City on Thursday, December 3, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 2 from 5 – 8 p.m. at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt Street, in Charles City. Madeline was born on March 29, 1919 in rural Nashua, Iowa, the daughter of L. Howard and Iva (Coffman) Tefft. She was raised in Nashua and graduated from Nashua High School in 1936. She and her family moved to Chicago in 1943 where she lived for two years. Madeline was united in marriage to Harold W. Jacobs on February 11, 1945 in the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple made their home in Charles City. Harold passed away in 1990.

Madeline was an active member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the Church Circle and had also sung in the church choir. She also was a volunteer for Hospice and Meals on Wheels, and also played the piano at the Chautauqua Guest Homes for many years. She was an avid pianist and reader. She also enjoyed painting and bird watching.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, William (Kathy) Jacobs of Charles City, Allen (Peggy) Jacobs of Jefferson and Marilyn Jacobs (Ed Brown) of Overland Park, KS; grandchildren, Brad (Dina) Boehmer, Lee Jacobs, Adam Jacobs, Grant (Cassie) Jacobs, Paul (Ashley) Jacobs, Nathaniel Jacobs, and Elizabeth Jacobs; great grandchildren, Corey Boehmer, Nicolette Boehmer, Megan Boehmer, Dana and Josephine; and brother, William (Lucille) Tefft of Newton, NJ.

Merlin “Mick” Bonwell


Merlin “Mick” Bonwell, 87, of Charles City, died Thursday, November 26, 2009, at his home.

Funeral services for Mick Bonwell will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor David Werges of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Merlin Howard Bonwell was born May 27, 1922, at Nashua, the son of Charles and Pearl (Jones) Bonwell. He received his education from a rural Nashua school. Mick proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. On November 28, 1946, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Nicholson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Mick worked for many years in the foundry at the Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His interests included hunting, fishing, golfing and playing cards.

Living family members include two sons, Bob Bonwell of Charles City and Brad Bonwell of Waterloo; three grandchildren, Toni Bonwell, Bill and Bob Mangano; 12 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife on May 5, 1995; two brothers, Darold “Buck” and Don Bonwell; and two sisters, Ruth Wiltsie and Gladys Bonwell.

Charles L. Vandeventer


Charles L. Vandeventer, 48, of Charles City, died Monday, November 23, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City of a heart attack.

Funeral services for Charles Vandeventer will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Michael Downey of the Evangelical Free Church will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday and from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Saturday.

Charles Lamont Vandeventer was born in Charles City, Iowa on November 7, 1961, the son of Edward and Evelyn (Coomer) Vandeventer. He attended Charles City Schools and in 1979 during his senior year he quit high school and joined the Marine Corps. He later received his GED and an AA degree in Security Administration. During his 12 year stint in the USMC he was stationed in many places around the world. While stationed at Camp Pendleton California he met his future wife, Linda Valencia and on October 12, 1984 they were married in Garden Grove, California. After his release from the military he became involved in the security business, eventually owing his own security business, CLV Statewide Security in Garden Grove, California. He was also a special investigator for the Garden Grove police department. Due to health issues he sold his business in 2004, retired and returned to Charles City. Chuck loved to fish and during the years he lived in Charles City you would often see him fishing with his brother-in-law Bill at the Beauty Dam or at the Bend. He was a devoted Miami Dolphin fan beginning with the team’s inception in the late 1970s. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR and playing pool. He shared a special bond with his little dog Taco.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Linda Vandeventer of Charles City; a son, Charles Vandeventer II and a daughter, Evelyn Vandeventer both of Charles City; a grandson, Brandon Vandeventer; two sisters, Kathy (Tim) Gerkins of Oakley, Calif. and Chris (Bill) Tonn of Charles City; a brother, Ed (Sheila) Vandeventer of Nashua; adopted sister, Kathy Vandeventer of Minneapolis; uncle and aunt, Larry and Norma Carver of Mason City; an aunt, Ella Vandeventer of Charles City; and high school best friend Eric Dell of Georgia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brothers, Ronald and Donald Vandeventer; daughter, Rosana Cortinas in 2007; and uncle, Ray Vandeventer.

Edna K. Garner


Edna K. Garner, 89, of Charles City, died Thursday, November 19, 2009, at the Elizabeth Martin Health Care Center, Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls.

Funeral services for Edna Garner will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Margaret Hutchens of the First Christian Church and Pastor Phil Corr of the First Congregational Church will officiate. Burial will be in Harlington Municipal Cemetery, Waverly.

Edna Kathleen See was born February 18, 1920, in Waverly, the daughter of Charles and Catherine (Gram) See. In 1938, she graduated from the Waverly High School and later attended Wartburg College for one year. On November 15, 1941, she was united in marriage to Clayton Garner. She was employed for 18 years as a secretary at the Washington Elementary School in Charles City. Edna served as the organist at the First Christian Church since 1970. She was a member of the First Congregational Church where she served on many church groups and the music committee. Edna was also very active in the American Legion Auxiliary #174, Heritage Club, Senior Citizens Center, B-Sharp Combo and was a Foster Grandparent since 1995. Her interests included word games, volunteering, music for others, elementary children, and fun times with her grandchildren.

Living family members include her three children, Catherine (Leonard) Upham of Cedar Falls, John (Connie) Garner of Sun Prairie, Wis. and Margaret (James) Dunston, Jr. of Clarksville; four grandchildren, Laura Sandham, David (Elsa) Upham, John (Maria) Piazza and Kyle Garner; one great granddaughter, Louisa Robb-Upham; and a sister, Myrna Matheson of Duluth, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Gabriel Koenigsfeld


Gabriel Koenigsfeld, 27, of Sioux Falls, S.D., died Tuesday, November 17, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, as the result of a construction accident.

A funeral Mass for Gabriel Koenigsfeld will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Monsignor Walter Brunkan of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Father James Koenigsfeld will concelebrate the Mass. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Roseville.

Friends may call at the St. Mary’s School, Roseville, 2397 Highway 14, rural Marble Rock, from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday. Visitation will continue an hour before the Mass at the church on Saturday.

Gabriel Jon Koenigsfeld was born March 22, 1982, at Mason City, the Son of Richard and Dian (Boelsen) Koenigsfeld. He graduated from the RRMR High School in Rockford. Gabe then attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D., where he played football and graduated with a degree in construction management in 2006. On June 23, 2007, he was united in marriage to Stephanie Bolden of Marshall, Minn. He enjoyed playing football for the Warriors and Jackrabbits where he served as team captain and was honored with numerous awards. He spent countless hours doing the things he enjoyed which included hunting, fishing, playing video games, and watching movies. Gabe always enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and was very special to his nephews and niece. He was looking forward to the birth of his first child due in April 2010. Gabe was often described as a “gentle giant” and had a personality and spirit that was larger than life. It was this spirit coupled with his tremendous work ethic that helped him earn the respect and adoration of everyone who had the pleasure of crossing paths with him. His gentle and loving spirit will be forever remembered by his teammates, friends, niece, nephews, brother, sister, parents, wife and someday his child. Gabe was so excited to begin the next stage of life as a father and his spirit will no doubt live on through his child. We will forever miss you Gabe, but we know that you will always be keeping a watchful eye on all of the lives that your spirit has touched.

Joseph L. Springer, 66, of Charles City, died Monday, November 16, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

On June 1, 1963, he was united in marriage to Sharon Kay Dana at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He was employed as a night watchman at the RJC Corporation. Joseph was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. His interests included hunting, trapping, fishing, clam hunting and raising raccoons.

Living family members included his wife Sharon Springer of Charles City; three children, Colleen (Jim) Zander of Charles City, Micheal (Deb) Springer of Graettinger and James (Tammy) Springer of Charles City; five grandchildren, Sarah Sullivan, Mark Mennenga, Samantha Springer, Bryan Springer and Alexa Jo Springer; two great grandchildren, Hunter Sullivan and Isabella Fisher; five step-grandchildren; one step-great grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

Betty Nehls


Betty Nehls, 77, of Charles City, died Saturday, November 14, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Memorial services for Betty Nehls will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, November 21, 2009, at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastors David Werges and Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Betty Jeanne Bissonnette Nehls was born May 13, 1932, at Waterloo, the daughter of Claire and LaVerna (Woodworth) Bissonnette. She graduated from Charles City High School. On September 6, 1953, she was united in marriage to Ronald Nehls. Over the years Betty worked as a secretary for Salsbury Laboratories, Sherman Nursery and the University of Iowa. She was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church and Daughters of the Revolution. Her interests included various types of needlework, quilting, watching both Iowa Hawkeye and Comet sports.

Living family members include a daughter, Sharon (Rick) Janssen of Zumbro Falls, Minn.; and two grandchildren, Sidney and Cory Janssen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on September 17, 2009; a daughter, Linda Gifford; and a sister, Arlene Smith.
