Duane Zwanziger


Duane Zwanziger, 73, of Ionia, died Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Duane Zwanziger will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Saint John Lutheran Church in Nashua. Pastor Tom Hagen will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Duane Leroy Zwanziger was born July 2, 1935, in rural Plainfield, the son of Leo and Mary Marie (Buckel) Zwanziger. He graduated from the Plainfield High School. On May 26, 1963, he was united in marriage to Carol Buttolph at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo. Duane was employed at the Hartmann Locker in Plainfield from 1954 to 1957. He then co-owned and operated Ionia Locker with his brother Bill from 1957 to 1974 along with farming from 1966 to 2000 and then operated Duane Zwanziger Trucking from 1992 to 2000. Duane was a member of the Saint John Lutheran Church in Nashua, Chickasaw County Cattlemen Association, Chickasaw County 4H Council and Chickasaw Trustee. His interests included playing cards, visiting with people and spending time with his children, grandchildren and irritating Carol "My Way Or The Highway".

Living family members include his wife Carol Zwanziger of Ionia; two children, Bruce (Sharla) Zwanziger of New Hampton and Connie (Chris) O‚Neill of Mackinaw, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Madison Zwanziger, Jake Zwanziger, Dillon Zwanziger, Austin O‚Neill, Bryce O‚Neill, Karli O‚Neill and Grace O‚Neill; his mother, Mary Marie Zwanziger of Waverly; two sisters, Jean Balvanz of Shell Rock and Linda (Don) Luck of Clarksville, Tenn.; two brothers, William „Bill‰ (Peggy) Zwanziger of Ionia and Leland (Pat) Zwanziger of Nashua; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; sister-in-law, Delores Zwanziger; and brother-in-law, Ernie Balvanz.
