Irene Baldwin

Irene Baldwin, 93, of Charles City, died Friday, July 25, 2008, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Irene Baldwin will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Gary Van Wert, of Trinity United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 1 p.m. until service time on Tuesday.

Irene Ruth Steele Baldwin was born August 2, 1914, at Caledonia, Minn., the daughter of Clarence and Iveeda (Twite) Steele. She graduated from Caledonia High School. On August 5, 1940, she was united in marriage to Joseph Steele at Decorah. They resided in Charles City where Joseph died on October 24, 1977. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Her interests included playing cards and gardening. Irene also volunteered for many years at the Treasure Chest.

Living family members include a brother, Francis Steele of LaCrosse, Wis.; two sisters, Marie Rose and Mavis Reinhardt both of Caledonia, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews including Barb (Larry) Gelner of Charles City; and two nephews, Bruce DeBower and Barry (Cheryl) DeBower both of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers; and two sisters.

Elda M. Meyers


Elda M. Meyers, 93, of Charles City, died Friday, July 18, 2008, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Elda Meyers will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. The Reverend
Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8p.m. Tuesday, where the Rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. and a Vigil
Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the Mass at the church on Wednesday.

Elda Mary LaBounty Meyers was born June 24, 1915, at Charles City, the daughter of Louis and Ida (Springer) LaBounty. She graduated from the
Immaculate Conception Catholic School. On February 7, 1934, she was united in marriage to Leonard Meyers at Charles City. Elda was employed
at Gibbons Ready to Wear for five years and the Floyd County Treasurers Office for 20 years. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception
Catholic Church, St. Mary Circle, Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge and the V.F.W. Her interests included cooking, going to dances, watching softball, an
avid Chicago Cubs fan, rodeos, traveling, wintering in Florida, and her grandchildren.

Living family members include her three children, Myrna (Lyle) Schlader, DeWayne (Darlene) Meyer and Shirley (Chuck) Weiss all of Charles City;
17 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; granddaughter, Kristin Schlader; and four brothers, Harry, Lloyd, Russell and Raymond
LaBounty.

Lenos Lloyd Ensign, entered this world Tuesday July 15, 2008, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly as one of God's little angels.

Family graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008 in Greenwood Cemetery at Nashua with Pastor Deborah Gage officiating.

Visitation will be Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Memorials may be directed to the family.

He is survived by his mother and father, Lindsay Connor and Kerry Ensign of Nashua; two step-brothers, Brett and Keyan Ensign; his step-sister, Madisyn Ensign; maternal grandparents, Lorie (Lee) Fisher of Nashua; paternal grandparents, Connie (Don) Sherman of Horton and Rick (Becky) Ensign of Nashua; maternal great-grandparents, Lenos & Kay Connor of Nashua; step great-grandmothers, Rose Marie Sherman and Betty Caster both Charles City.

Lenos was preceded in death by his paternal great-grandparents.

Adam M. Lack


Adam M. Lack, 33, of Nora Springs, died Sunday, July 13, 2008, in a single vehicle accident in rural Mitchell County.

A funeral Mass for Adam Lack will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Reverend Carl Ries, pastor, will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday where there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Friday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Adam Michael Lack was born May 13, 1975, at Mason City, the son of Gary (deceased) and Veronica (Naumann) Lack. Adam spent his childhood in several towns in northern Iowa including Rockford, Cedar Falls, and Mason City before moving to Buffalo, Wyo. during his freshman year of high school. He was a remarkably gifted wrestler, becoming an AAU national champion at the age of 9 and 4-time high school state place winner in Wyoming. He was valedictorian of his class at Buffalo High School, received an academic scholarship to Brown University and recently received his degree in business economics from Brown University in Providence, R.I. He had formerly owned and operated the Floyd Y restaurant in Floyd. More recently he had operated the Eagle's Nest bar in Nora Springs. Until the time of his death he was an ethanol plant
operations supervisor at POET Biorefining. He enjoyed reading, writing and fishing in his spare time. Adam's life was one of caring for others including his mother, Veronica, and his nieces and nephews. He was deeply thoughtful and loving. He was protective of his loved ones. After the death of his father from cancer in 2004, Adam remained at home to help his mother with managing the family farm while pursuing his business ventures and working at the ethanol plant. One of his best college friends, Ray Rocha, died on September 11, 2001 in the World Trade Center attacks. Another dear friend, Dimitri Gavriel, was later killed in action in Iraq after joining the marines. Regarding the friends he had lost Adam had written, "I wish I could fish with Dimitri once more, and do anything with Ray." Adam may be described best in his own writing. In relation to his love of family and friends, "One of my favorite occasional occurrences is being awoken early by my giggling nieces, Gabriella and Erica. Time spent with friends, preferably laughing, is a priority for me." In relation to his quest for answers, "I like thunderstorms and truth, because they answer to no one. somewhere there's always an equation I'm working on in my mind that haunts me; but I'll always break it." He described his heroes as "all those who swim against the tide or care for the less fortunate."

He is survived by his mother, Veronica Lack of Nora Springs; five siblings, Anthony Lack of Baytown, TX, Tanya (Shawn) Hamilton of Dallas, TX, Heidi (Robert) Thunhorst of Iowa City, Benjamin (Fernanda DeCollo) Lack of Des Moines, and William (Brandi Moon) Lack of Iowa City; and nieces and nephews, Gustav Thunhorst, Erica Lack, Gabriella Lack, and Catherina Lack. His boyish laugh and warm sense of humor will
remain with everyone always.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and father.

Florence C. Burke

Florence C. Burke, 88, of 801 Blunt Parkway, Charles City, died Saturday July 12, 2008 at the Floyd County Medical Center.

A Family Prayer Services will be held 10:30 AM, Tuesday July 15, 2008 at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt, Charles City. Officiating will be the Rev. Carl Ries and Sr. Diana Blong. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Inurnment of the cremated remains will be in Calvary Cemetery. Florence was born on February 29, 1920 in Dubuque the daughter of Leo and Mary (Kettenhoffen) Cunningham. She graduated from Dubuque High School, then attended secretarial school in Dubuque. She enjoyed playing tennis and ice-skating at the nearby rink with her friends. She married Lt. Kenneth J. Burke who was in the military on April 26, 1943 at St. Martha's Church in Sarasota, FL. They moved to Charles City in 1950 where Kenneth operated his CPA office for 30 years and raised three children, Barbara (Holm) of Delano, MN, Patricia Hanson of Glendale, AZ, and Thomas Burke, of Coeur D'Alene, ID. She had a great opportunity in spending time with her grandchildren. They were members of Immaculate Conception Church. Florence was active as a Girl Scout Leader, selling Real Estate, and volunteering as a Pink Lady at the hospital. Her family surrounded her life, and she loved living on Cedar Circle by the river and later at the apartment on Rob Roy Lane. She spent her last two years at Port Charles.

Florence is survived in addition to her three children, three grandchildren, Sara, Andy, and Emma; four Great Grandchildren Ben, Peter, Jamie, and Max; one sister, Barbara Gesell, Oklahoma City, and Leo Cunningham, Los Angeles, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth on November 5, 1996, her sister Ethel (Ney) and brother Joseph Cunningham.

Timothy W. Hubbard, 26 of 628 S. Carolina, Mason City died Saturday, July 5, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center, Mason City.

Tim was born on November 3, 1981 in Rockford, Illinois the son of David Wayne and Brenda “Thompson” Hubbard. He attended school in Rockford, Illinois and then Mason City. For 3 ½ years he worked in the tobacco fields in Kentucky and did construction work installing concrete foundations. While he lived with his adoptive mother Julie and her husband John Stafford of Vine Grove, KY. He then moved back to Mason City and was a heavy equipment operator driving concrete trucks, while building the Avenue of the Saints. His last job was laying carpet and tile for the Flooring Gallery in Mason City. He very much enjoyed fishing with his brother Jeffery, riding dirt bikes, hunting, and dancing at area clubs. His best friend who treated him like a brother, James Hauser would join Tim in hanging out with friends and family, attending concerts, camping, and swimming at Big Blue. Tim will be remembers for his practical jokes and sense of humor.

Those left to remember include his mother’s Brenda Gustafson and fiancé Clay Trytten, Mason City; Julie and John Stafford, Vine Grove, KY; his son Nicholas Wayne Hubbard, Charles City, his daughter Jasmin Petzoldt, Mason City, His maternal Grandmother Mary Lou Thompson, Mason City; Paternal Grandparents, Richard and his wife Sandy Hubbard, and Karen Hubbard all of Love’s Park, Ill; five sisters Nichole Hubbard, Charles City; Christina and her husband Adrflo Hernadze, Garret, KY; Johnna Bieneman, Vine Grove, KY; Patricia Park, Brandburge, KY; Jamie Thompson, Garret, KY; two brothers David Hubbard, Charles City; Jeffery Johnson, Lexington, KY; 4 uncles, and 3 aunts, and several nieces and nephews.

His father David who died in 1994 and his Maternal Grandfather George Thompson preceeded Tim in death.

Harold Lloyd Bailey


Harold Lloyd Bailey, 63, of Charles City, died Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at his residence of ALS (Lou Gehrig‚s Disease).

Funeral services for Harold Bailey will be held 2 p.m. Monday, July 7, 2008, at the Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Gary Van Wert will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

Harold Lloyd Bailey was born January 5, 1945, in Belmond, the son of Lloyd and Dorothy (Olsen) Bailey. He graduated from Dumont High School. On March 20, 1965, he was united in marriage to Judy Ritzman at the Central Methodist Church in Charles City. After living in Waverly until 1970, they farmed south of Charles City. Harold was employed with Terex in Waverly for 39 years, retiring in 2003. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Harold enjoyed farming and raising cattle. Family was always important to Harold and he looked forward to being a part of their lives. Harold will also be remembered for the mischievous spark in his eye.

Living family members include his wife, Judy Bailey of Charles City; two daughters, Hope (Mick) Timmerman of Cedar Falls and Kathy (Dave) Strauser of Clarksville; four grandchildren, Jordan and Nathan Timmerman and Carly and Courtney Strauser; his mother, Dorothy Bailey of Hampton; and three sisters, Karen (Harry) Jungling of Bristow, Linda (John) Campbell of Hampton and Ellen (Larry) Day of Shell Rock.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Bailey in August of 1985.

Bernard L. Meyer, 78, of Charles City, died Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Bernard Meyer will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastor June Keel will officiate. Burial will be in Osage Cemetery in Osage. Military Honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Bernard Loren Meyer was born May 5, 1930, at Fairmont, Minn., the son of Roy and Ruth (Flora) Meyer. He graduated from the Rudd High School in 1949. As a senior he played 1st base on the 1949 State Championship Baseball Team. On January 16, 1951, he was united in marriage to Jeanne Brandau at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. He served in the United States Marines and in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. Bernard was employed for 38 years by the Milwaukee Railroad as a Telegrapher, which later became the Soo Line. He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, American Legion, Honor Guard, and Charles City Singers. Bernard enjoyed volunteering on the Ruthven Fire Department for 14 years. His interests included square dancing, golf, working with stain glass, crossword puzzles, and the church choir.

Living family members include his wife, Jeanne Meyer of Charles City; five children, Cathy (Tom) Dole of Brandon, Miss., Mike (Jackie) Meyer of Ruthven, Monty (Beverly) Meyer of Bettendorf, Rhonda (Kevin) Griffin of Laurens, and Jim (Brenda) Meyer of Omaha, Nebr.; 10 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; step-mother, Florence Meyer of Fairmont, Minn.;two half sisters, Janice (Don) Larsen of Warner Springs, Calif. and Nancy (Bill) Roslansky of Fairmont, Minn.; and a half brother, Steven (Becky) Meyer of Fairmont, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and infant son, Loren Meyer in 1953.

Phyllis Fern Newton Hobert was born March 29, 1920, at Hartville, Mo., the daughter of Esther Gene and Mary Sada (Young) Newton. She graduated from the Charles City High School in 1939. On September 28, 1941, she was united in marriage to Wendell Hobert at Charles City. Fern was employed part-time at the Salsbury Baptist Home. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Cordova Circle and Central Star Club. Fern enjoyed volunteering at the church kitchen, Bible School and Meals onWheels. Her interests included gardening, canning and freezing vegetables, baking, helping at church, traveling and card club for more then 40 years.

Living family members include her husband, Wendell Hobert of Charles City; six children, Linda (Robert) Milton of Phoenix, Ariz., Robert (Judy) Hobert of Penn Valley, Calif., Lester (Linda) Hobert of Charles
City, Mary (Jerry) Cross of Forest City, Edward (Teresa) Hobert of Charles City and Aaron Hobert of Charles City; 14 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; two brothers, Duane (Carolyn) Newton of Carson City, Nev. and Kenneth Dean Newton of Burlington; two sister-in-laws, Dorothy (Don) Swinton of Waverly and Norma (Paul) Nieman of Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.
