Loyd Barry

Loyd Barry, 70, of Charles City, passed away Saturday, March 21, 2009, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City surrounded by his family after a long courageous fight with Parkinson’s Disease .
A funeral Mass for Loyd Barry will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.
Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday where the Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the Mass.
Loyd John Barry was born January 21, 1939, at Lincoln, Nebr., the son of Francis and Inez (Hartz) Barry. In 1956 he graduated from Valparaiso High School, Valparaiso, Nebr. and later from Nebraska Barber College. On May 13, 1961, he was married to Judith Woodard at Agnew, Nebr. They later divorced. On February 21, 1995, he was united in marriage to Joyce Shollenbarger Kingery in the Cayman Islands. Loyd was a barber in Lincoln for 15 years moving to Charles City in 1972 when he purchased the Comet Bowl. In May of 1984 he opened the Choo-Chew Supper Club which he operated until his retirement in 1999. Loyd was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, was past president of the Nebraska State Barbers Association, Iowa Bowling Proprietors Association, Charles City Bowling Association Hall of Fame, Charles City Chamber of Commerce, Elks Lodge for 43 years and the Moose Lodge for 34 years. He enjoyed family, food, friends and lots of fun.
Living family members include his wife, Joyce of Charles City; five children, Paula (Ron) Blount of Amana, Peggy (David) Sweet of Charles City, Mark (Jessica) Barry of Charles City, Kristi (Ruben) Islas of Kansas City, Mo.; and Kelly (Kathy) Kingery of Osage; 11 grandchildren, Ryan Klein, Barry (Michelle) Sweet, Samantha (Jake Hubert) Sweet, Tad (Cari Lucas) Barry, Trent Barry, Stephani Barry, Sarah Barry, Kaden Barry, Ceth Barry, Jared Islas and Jacob Islas; a brother, Louis (Marg) Barry of Valparaiso, Nebr.; a sister, Ellen (Gary) Hellerich of Valparaiso, Nebr; three brothers-in-law, Donald (Nancy) Shollenbarger of Clermont, Fla., Dennis (Vickie) Shollenbarger of Charles City, and David (Kellie) Shollenbarger of Marshalltown.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a daughter-in-law, Shelli Barry.
