Merlin “Mick” Bonwell


Merlin “Mick” Bonwell, 87, of Charles City, died Thursday, November 26, 2009, at his home.

Funeral services for Mick Bonwell will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor David Werges of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday and an hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Merlin Howard Bonwell was born May 27, 1922, at Nashua, the son of Charles and Pearl (Jones) Bonwell. He received his education from a rural Nashua school. Mick proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. On November 28, 1946, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Nicholson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Mick worked for many years in the foundry at the Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His interests included hunting, fishing, golfing and playing cards.

Living family members include two sons, Bob Bonwell of Charles City and Brad Bonwell of Waterloo; three grandchildren, Toni Bonwell, Bill and Bob Mangano; 12 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife on May 5, 1995; two brothers, Darold “Buck” and Don Bonwell; and two sisters, Ruth Wiltsie and Gladys Bonwell.
