Anna Mae Marvin


Anna Mae Marvin, 78, of Charles City, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Anna Mae Marvin will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastors Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Visitation will continue Friday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Anna Mae Milhan Marvin was born July 30, 1930, in Howard County, the daughter of Arthur and Agnes (Bunston) Milhan. She received her education at Riceville. On April 20, 1951, she was united in marriage to Keith Marvin at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Anna Mae worked for a time at the eggplant in Osage and Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home. She was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, U.A.W. Auxiliary and the WIBC Bowling League. Her interests included dancing, bowling and playing 500. Anna Mae was a dedicated homemaker that always took an interest in what her family was involved in and looked forward to sharing the events of life with them.

Living family members include her husband, Keith Marvin of Charles City; eight children, Donald Marvin of Kansas City, Mo., Richard Marvin of Mason City, Jerry Marvin of Charles City, Francis (Cindy) Marvin of Britt, Rodney (Jessica) Marvin of Clear Lake, Debra Jo Marvin of Stacyville, Kelvin (Jennifer) Marvin and Kevin (Sonja) Marvin both of Charles City; 15 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; three sisters, Leona Arndt of Charles City, Esther (Marvin) Shoger of Riceville and Mary Lou Carnile of Edgewood; and a brother, Ralph (Martha) Milhan of Davenport.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Mary Lee Marvin; and a brother, Harold Milhan.

LaVerne Jacobs


LaVerne Jacobs, 76, of Charles City, died Friday, June 26, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for LaVerne Jacobs will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastors David Werges and Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

LaVerne William Jacobs was born January 30, 1933, at Plainfield, the son of Forrest and Malita (Wefel) Jacobs. He received his education at Charles City. On October 15, 1949, he was united in marriage to Juanita Robeson at Lancaster, Mo. LaVerne farmed all his life, was proprietor of Jacobs Trucking, was employed for 20 years at Salsbury Laboratories and also worked at Jacobs Elevator. He was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. LaVerne was a farmer at heart and enjoyed driving semi and taking road trips to Wisconsin. His family was always important to him and he would visit with them daily, taking special interest in the grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Living family members include his wife, Juanita of Charles City; three daughters, Linda (Les) Hobert of Charles City, Debra (Tim) Hovey of Charles City and DeeAnn (Craig) Moline of Boone; seven grandchildren, Wendy (Lindsey) Botkin, Jeff (Misty) Hobert, Travis Hobert, Ryan (Holly) Wright and Joshua, Kelsey and Claire Moline; five great grandchildren including one soon to arrive; two brothers, Ralph Jacobs of Tex. and Roger (Marcia) Jacobs of Charles City; and four sisters, Delores Farner and Sandra (Terry) Slinger both of Cedar Rapids, Beverly (Chuck) Waddell of Floyd and Tammy Jacobs of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Michael Ritter

Michael Ritter, 58, of Charles City, died Thursday, June 25, 2009, at his home.

Funeral services for Michael Ritter will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Kent Sovine of the Bethany Alliance Church will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Michael Dennis Ritter was born February 5, 1951, in Mason City, the son of Kenneth and Betty (Drher) Ritter. He received his education at Hayward, Calif. Michael served in the United States Marines during the Viet Nam era. On November 7, 1984, he was united in marriage to Carla Johns. Michael worked for Alexander Batteries for ten years and also at the Mason City fairgrounds. His interests included fishing, model car making, and riding motorcycles. Michael took special interest in his grandchildren and enjoyed taking time to spend with them.

Living family members include his wife, Carla Ritter of Charles City; four children, Michelle Ritter of Moorhead, Minn., Michael (Jessica) Fingalsen, Starla Ritter and Sherry Ritter all of Charles City; six grandchildren, Destiny and Cory Fingalsen, Taia and Micah Hillhouse, Maliki Ritter, and a grandson on the way; a brother, Robert Ritter of Charles City; and two sisters, Debbie and Bonnie Ritter of Charles City.

Thelma Gaston


Thelma Gaston, 92, of Floyd, died Monday, June 22, 2009, at her son’s home in Floyd.

Funeral services for Thelma Gaston will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church. Pastor Ruth Yeaton will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

Thelma Grace Morris Gaston was born December 13, 1916, in Mercer County, Mo., the daughter of Joseph and Mabel (Smothers) Morris. She graduated from Princeton High School in Princeton, Mo. and from William Jewel College in 1937. On August 15, 1943, she was united in marriage to Lyle Gaston at Princeton. They moved to the Floyd area where they were engaged in farming. Thelma taught school in Iowa for 25 years. She also volunteered to do tax preparation at the Charles City Senior Citizens Center. Thelma was a member of the First Baptist Church and Iowa Retired Teachers Association. Her interests included vegetable and flower gardening and enjoying the out of doors. Thelma looked forward to spending time with her family and sharing many family dinners with them.

Living family members include two sons, Lyle (Sam) Gaston of Floyd and Wally (Kathy) Gaston of Custer, S.D.; nine grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on May 8, 2001; and a brother.

Daniel D. Smith

Daniel D. Smith, 46, of Charles City, died Friday morning, June 19, 2009, at the Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services for Daniel Smith will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City. Pastor Gary Van Wert and Pastor Jim Stiles will officiate. Inurnment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

Daniel Dean Smith was born December 3, 1962, at Charles City, the son of Dennis and Joan (Stiles) Smith. He graduated from the Charles City High School and NIACC in Mason City. Dan was employed at the Cedar Ridge Golf Course for 22 years and at the Comet Bowl both in Charles City. His interests included golf and bowling.

Living family members include his special friend, Marie Griffin of Charles City; son, Ryan Olson and his fiancée, Jessica of Cedar Rapids; grandson, Cael Olson of Cedar Rapids; parents, Dennis and Joan Smith of Charles City; brother, Ronald (Barbara) Smith of Charles City; two step-children, Jamie Griffin and Joshua Griffin both of Charles City; five step-grandchildren, Jasmine Miller, Corden Poyner, Jayden Poyner, Isabell Griffin and Marcus Griffin all of Charles City; six nieces, Shawna Smith, Kayla Smith, Cathy Johnson, Samantha Simpson, Autumn Simpson and Serena Simpson; and many aunts; uncles; and cousins.

Amil M. Fisher Jr.


Amil M. Fisher Jr., 93, of Charles City, died Wednesday evening, June 17, 2009, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Graveside services for Amil Fisher Jr. will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Military Honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

There will be no visitation.

Amil Melvin Fisher Jr. was born March 5, 1916, at Charles City, the son of Emil and Fannie (Lines) Fisher Sr. He graduated from the Charles City High School. On November 3, 1941, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Albrecht at Osage. He served in the United States Navy from 1938 to 1945. Amil retired from the United States Post Office after 30 years as a rural mail carrier in St. Ansgar. He was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. His interests included carpentry work, helping his family and being a caregiver to his wife.

Living family members include his wife, Dorothy Fisher of Charles City; two children, Gary (Ann) Fisher of Charles City and daughter, Susan Fisher of Burnsville, Minn.; six grandchildren, Cherie (Dennis) Walker, Tom Fisher, Stephen (Joan Perko) Fisher, James (Janee’) Fisher, Jason (Christina) Rost and Jennifer (Eddie) Osmancevic; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Gladys Waters


Gladys Waters 90, formerly of 504 W. Main, Rockford, died Saturday afternoon, June 14, 2009 at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 am, Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at Holy Name Catholic Church, 507 1st Ave. NW, Rockford. Officiating will be the Rev. Father Craig Steimel of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 pm Tuesday at the church and again one hour prior to services. Gladys Josephine was born on November 28, 1918 in Rockford the daughter of Guy Markley and Ida Mary (O’Rourke) Biggs. She was one of ten children. She attended school in Rockford and lived her whole life in the Rockford area with a short time in Marble Rock and Nora Springs. Gladys was united in marriage at Holy Name Catholic Church to Clayton Waters on August 12, 1939. To this union was born five daughters. Gladys was always faithful and active in her church and trusted her decisions to God. She loved reading and being a member of Sr. Citizens. Her pride and joy was in sharing and being with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. To each and every one of them she showed her love. A most memorable trip was to California with her grandson to visit. She went everywhere and even had the chance to meet Tom Cruise. As special hobbies she tended her plants and collected all types of chickens.

Alice Leona Brown Peterson was born March 28, 1916, in Estherville, the daughter of Grandville “Dick” and Olive (Allen) Brown. She attended school in Estherville and graduated from West Union High School. On March 20, 1943, she was united in marriage to John G. Peterson in Minneapolis, Minn. Alice was a nurse’s aide at the Chautauqua Guest Homes in Charles City and the Faith Home in Osage. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Osage.

Living family members include two children, Karen (Roger) Turner of Cedar Rapids and Glenn (Mercedes) Peterson of Alsip, Ill.; a sister, Vivian VanValkenburg of Omaha, Nebr.; a brother-in-law, Elmer Oelkers of Dodge, Nebr; a special niece, Coe Lytle of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

Claude W. Graham


Claude W. Graham, 92, of Charles City, died Wednesday morning, June 10, 2009, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Claude Willie Graham was born December 24, 1916, at Bristow, the son of John and Minnie (Dickman) Graham. He attended the Greene High School. On August 3, 1940, he was united in marriage to Wilma Jean Lewis at Powersville. From June 29, 1945 to July 16, 1946, he served in the United States Army. Claude farmed with his father until he was 18 years old and then spent 2 years in the C.C.C. in Hampton. Later he was employed at White Farm where he retired after 40 years. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, V.F.W. and the Midis Church Circle. His interests included spray painting with his son's, working, and spending time with his wife.

Living family members include his wife, Jean Graham of Charles City; three children, Claudia (Robert) Pine of Leland, N.C., James (Linda) Graham of Modesto, Calif. and John Graham of Des Plaines, Ill.; five grandchildren, Melissa (William) Alexander, Susan (David) Novais, Sarah Graham, Robert (Pamela) Pine, Paul Graham; five great-grandchildren, Kathryn Alexander, Shelby Alexander, Olivia Novais, Juliana Novais and
Makena Pine; brother, Robert (Delores) Graham of Nashua; brother-in-law, Ronald Krueger of Zebulon, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

Mildred Block


Mildred Block, 98, formerly of 202 2nd Avenue in Charles City, passed away Thursday, June 4, 2009 at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, June10, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 Main Street S, in Charles City, with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 9 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt Street, Charles City, and again one hour prior to the service at the church. Mildred was born on December 5, 1910 in Floyd County, Iowa, the daughter of Otto C. and Minnie P. (Ebert) Krumrey. She attended Charles City High School, graduating in 1928. Mildred was united in marriage to Virgil R. Block on August 22, 1943 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Virgil passed away on November 7, 1992. Mildred retired from White Farm after 36 years of service. She had been an assistant cashier and then a secretary in the Engineering Department. She was involved with many organizations. She was a member of St. John’s, the Charles City Women’s Club, the Rural Letter Carrier Auxiliary and the CNB Heritage Club.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sister, Viola Bartlett of Joplin, Missouri; her great niece, Kimberly Bartlett; and many good friends.

Oswald Glomsda


Oswald Glomsda, 82, of Sussex, Wis., died Wednesday morning, June 3, 2009, at the Community Memorial Hospital in Menomonee Falls, Wis.

Oswald Glomsda was born June 13, 1926, in Germany, the son of Paul and Martha (Joswig) Glomsda. He attended three years of bakery trade school in Germany. After being a baker for many years Oswald retired from Kohl’s Bakery in Milwaukee, Wis. Oswald was a member and volunteer at the Senior Center in Sussex, Wis. His interests included gardening, flowers, biking and taking care of his apartment complexes and his own home.

Living family members include two brothers, Arnold Glomsda and Helmut Glomsda both of Germany; two sisters, Christel (Otto) Radtke of Germany and Hildegard Ennen of Charles City, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Peter (Olympia) Glomsda, Ursel (Gustav), Karl-Heinz Glomsda, Barbel (Wilfried) Herbes, Thomas (Sabina) Glomsda, Christian (Sabina) Glomsda, Martin (Ute) Glomsda, Norbert Glomsda and Gerlind Glomsda all of Germany, Monika (Robert) Teeple of Greene, Iowa, Erika (Tom) Ennen of Conway, S.C., Jurgen (Marlene) Ennen of Homestead, Iowa, Werner (Marian) Ennen of Eau Claire, Wis, Manfred (Kathy) Ennen of Raymond, Iowa and Ingrid (Tom) Matousek of Prairie du Chien, Wis.

Clair A. Nehls


Clair A. Nehls, 85, of Mason City and formerly of Charles City, died Tuesday evening, June 2, 2009, at the Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral Mass for Clair Nehls will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday where there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the Mass at the church on Saturday.

Clair Arthur Nehls was born May 31, 1924, at Marble Rock, the son of Arthur and Anna (Reis) Nehls. He graduated from the Floyd High School. After high school, Clair served 2 ½ years in the United States Navy in the South Pacific. On October 5, 1946, he was united in marriage to LaDonna Mae Simerson at Chicago, Ill. Clair was employed for 34 ½ years at White Farm. In his earlier years Clair coached Little League Baseball in Charles City. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. His interests included fishing, hunting and spending time with his family.

Living family members include his 11 children, David (Charlotte) Nehls of Ionia, Douglas Nehls of West Des Moines, Mary (Gary) Druehl of Colwell, Karen (Bob) Roethler of Charles City, Diana (Dean) Bucknell of Charles City, Susan (Steve) Remond of Charles City, Daniel “Pete” Nehls of Charles City, Christina (Tony) Byers of Colwell, Catherine (Randy) Nibaur of Austin, Minn., Theresa (David) Turpan of Webster City and Dale Nehls of Mason City; many grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Roxanne Nehls of Wellsburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Dennis Nehls; granddaughter, Lisa Marie Nehls; grandson, Scott Druehl; two sisters and two brothers.
