Dale Groesbeck

Dale Groesbeck, 83, of Charles City, died Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Dale Groesbeck will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. The Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City. Military Honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday where the Knights of Columbus will lead the Rosary at 5:30 p.m. and where there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue an hour before the Mass at the church.

Francis Dale Groesbeck was born July 7, 1926, at Charles City, the son of Spencer and Dorothy (Wolf) Groesbeck. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1944. Dale proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II serving in Tinian and the Philippines. On August 3, 1947, he was united in marriage to Marguerite Jean Loye at the Church of the Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin, Minn. Dale attended Hamilton Business School before beginning his career with the Charles City Post Office where he would work for over 30 years. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, a life member of the American Legion Post #174, V.F.W. Post #3914 and the Nashua Town & Country Club. His interests included golfing, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.

Living family members include his wife, Jean of Charles City; 4 children, David (Shizuko) Groesbeck of Fredericksburg, Va., Douglas (Linda) Groesbeck of Charles City, Julie (Mike) Barrett of Wilber, Nebr., and Jayne Stowe of Charles City; 8 grandchildren, Eisaku (Tammi) Groesbeck, Kenji (Angie) Groesbeck, Jennifer (Jody) Armentrout, Emily (Jeff) Griswold, Teresa (John) Knudtson, Dan Groesbeck, Sean (Kristen) Stowe and Jordan Stowe; 4 great grandchildren, Rasy Groesbeck, Jackson Stowe, Ethyn Groesbeck and Logan Armentrout; a brother, Monty (Pat) Groesbeck of Brainard, Minn; two sisters-in-law, Joanne (Jersey) Jermier of Cedar Falls and Judy (Tom) Courtney of McKinney, Tex.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a great grandson, Hayden Dale Stowe.

Dolores Gray


Dolores Gray, 87, of Charles City, died Friday, March 19, 2010, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Dolores Gray will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday where the Rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. and the Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be held a 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Wednesday at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

Dolores Swehla Gray was born August 2, 1922, in Chickasaw County, the daughter of Charles and Nora (Hugeback) Swehla. She graduated from North Washington. On April 5, 1945, she was united in marriage to Selmer Gray. In 1962 they opened the S&D Lounge which they owned and operated for several years and then farmed. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Saint Francis Circle and Heritage Club. Her interests included dancing, playing cards, gardening, going to the cabin at Harper’s Ferry and fishing. Family was always important to Dolores and she looked forward to sharing her life with them. Dolores will always be remembered as a very hard worker and for her love of animals.

Living family members include three children, Bonnie (Leonard) Tegtmeier of Charles City, Larrie (Leigh) Gray of Austin, Minn. and Charles (Brenda) Gray of Cedar Falls; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on January 16, 1983; and a great grandson, Michael McCormick.

Dale V. Holm


Dale V. Holm, 60, of Osage, formerly of Charles City, died Monday, March 22, 2010, at his home of natural causes.

Funeral services for Dale Holm will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Inurnment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens at a later date. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Visitation will continue Friday at the church an hour prior.

Dale Victor Holm was born March 5, 1950, at Osage, the son of Victor and Lorraine (Zimmerman) Holm. He attended the Charles City High School and later received his GED. Dale proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. On July 31, 1971, he was united in marriage to Vickie Debban at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Dale worked at various places including White Farm Equipment Company and Happy Pork which is owned by Karl Theis. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. His interests included fishing, golfing, woodworking, gardening, feeding squirrels and watching high school and college wrestling. Family was very important to Dale and he always took special interest in what family members were involved in. He also looked forward to visiting with his friends.

Living family members include his wife, Vickie Holm of Osage; four children, Scott (Kim) Holm of Osage, Adam (Carla) Holm of Parkersburg, Travis (Heather) Holm of Osage currently living in Greene and Becky Holm and partner Paula Meynig of San Diego, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Dustin and Daniel Holm, Adam Stuart and Cierra Holm, Michelle, William and Tyler Aukes and Tyler, Emma and Anna Holm; four brothers, Al (Karen) Holm of Swaledale, Bob (Barb) Holm of Orchard, Rick Holm of Charles City and Don (Shirley) Holm of Charles City; and three sisters, Jackie (Al) Jacobs of Ellendale, Minn., Judy (Roger) Grimm of Elma and Diane (Tim) Francis of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Gloria Crumpton and husband Jim; a niece, Kim Grimm; and a nephew, Brian Crumpton.

Dolores Gray

Doris Sharp


Doris Sharp, 91, of Charles City, died Friday, March 19, 2010, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Doris Harriet Anderson Sharp was born May 6, 1918, in Rush City, Minn., the daughter of Harry and Aleda (Lund) Anderson. She graduated from South High School at Minneapolis, Minn. On April 23, 1939, she married Marvin Sharp at Minneapolis. They were engaged in farming until their divorce. She enjoyed working at Cashman’s Flower Shop for a number of years. Doris taught Sunday School for many years. She was a member of the Charles City Women’s Club, Friendly Birthday Club and Floyd County Volunteers. Doris enjoyed traveling, having visited eight countries and all 50 of the United States. Her interests included painting, crocheting, reading, writing poetry, and making quilts and lap robes.

Living family members include four children, Richard “Dick” Sharp of Greenville, Ill., Gerald “Jerry” D. (Jean) Sharp of Charles City, Darryl Sharp of Raymond and Carol (Ronald) Martin of Decorah; 16 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; a brother, Leslie (Lorraine) Anderson of Minneapolis, Minn. and a sister, Joyce Droel of Northfield, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Wayne Sharp; a grandson, Dennis Sharp; two brothers, Wendell and Willard Anderson; and a sister, Phyllis Melcher.

Kathlene E. Boggess


Kathlene E. Boggess, 63, of 707 6th Avenue in Charles City, died Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at Eleventh Street Chautauqua in Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents. Steven R. Burke


Steven R. Burke, 58 of Des Moines, and formerly of Rockford, Iowa, who died Monday evening, March 15, 2010 at the West Bridge Care and Rehab Center in Winterset, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church, 21 3rd ST. NW, Rockford, Iowa. Officiating will be the Rev. Judy Wooton. Steven Robert was born the oldest child of seven to Edward and Maxine (Myers) Burke in Charles City, Iowa on September 13, 1951. He graduated from Rudd-Rockford, Marble Rock High School and then attended Lincoln Technology Institute for Automotive Training In Des Moines. He started his career at General Tire and Stivers Lincoln Mercury and then for Zook Harley Davidson. In 1972 he worked for John Deere Works in Ankeny, Iowa and continued there for 30 years until he had a spinal cord injury and was forced to retire due to a disability. At the end of his career he was the final inspector for Deere. Steve loved life and enjoyed being a part of the outdoors, spending time with his brothers fishing in Wisconsin, catching his all time record of a 49 inch Muskie, hunting pheasants and deer, tending his garden, riding his motorcycle to Colorado and taking his dog Hershel on rides on it. His love of life was his family, nieces and nephews first and his cats Mira, Daisy, Mazzie and Tiger. Steve was a very generous guy and always took care of others. He was very active in the Local 450.

Those thankful in sharing Steve’s life include his mother Maxine Burke, Rockford; three sisters Marilou and her husband Donald Dormeier, Ft. Wayne, Indiana; Ellen and her husband Mike Shea, Hampton, IA; Kristi Mason, Rockford; three brothers Ervin and his wife Jane Burke, Ottumwa, IA; Mike and his wife Mary Burke, Harlan, IA; Robert and his wife Michelle Burke, Rochester, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

His Father in 2000 and his maternal grandparents Harold and Mary Myers preceded him in death.

Pamela J. Swan-Gitsch, 62, of Charles City, died Saturday afternoon, March 13, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Pamela Joyce Swan was born April 6, 1947, the daughter of Harlan and Barbara (Markwick) Swan. She graduated form Hawkeye Community College in 1992. After college Pamela was a LPN Nurse for many years. Her interests included spending time on the computer and internet and spending time with her family.

Living family members include her two daughters, Stephanie Swan of Bradgate and Kathleen (Rick) Burcham of Rudd; four grandchildren, Benjamin Jacobsen, Coty Miller, Jasmine Roper and Brianna Burcham; and a brother, David (Kathy) Swan of Denton, Tex.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a half sister, Walda Willey.

Ann M. Hume


Ann M. Hume, 82, of Charles City, died Friday morning, March 12, 2010, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Memorial services for Ann Hume will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastor David Werges will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Ann Mae Mackamul was born November 18, 1927, in Colwell, the daughter of Nickolaus and Mae Elizabeth (Bill) Mackamul. She graduated from the Charles City Community School. Ann was a lifelong resident of Charles City where she met and married Robert “Roy” Hume on September 1, 1946, at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. She began working for Salsbury Laboratories in 1954 and retired in 1992. Ann was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, Aid Circle of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church and served as treasurer of the Senior Center for many years. Her interests included sewing, baking and actively volunteered her time and talents.

Living family members include her daughters, Marcia (Jack) Taylor of Marble Rock and Cynthia (Lee) Chambers of Robins; four grandchildren, Michael (Gina) Taylor, Wendy (John) Dearth, Pamela (Ronn) Datema and Robert (Jill) Chambers; a great grandson, Douglas Taylor; brother, George (Peg) Mackamul; several aunts; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Lester Mackamul and Joe Mackamul; and a sister, Delores Swinton.

William F. Caha


William F. Cahal, 81, of Plainfield, died March 11, 2010, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services for William Cahal will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Gary Van Wert of the Trinity United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

William Frederick Cahal was born June 29, 1928, in Floyd County, the son of William and Clara (Farley) Cahal. He attended Floyd County Country Schools. He was united in marriage to Lavonna Matthews. They later divorced. Bill then married Clarice Hicks and they later divorced. In the 1950’s, he was employed at Goodyear Air Craft in Litchfield, Ariz. and later in San Diego, Calif. Bill moved back to Iowa in 1959 to take over his father’s farm west of Nashua, where he milked cows and farmed until 1998. After selling the dairy farm, he bought a small farm near Plainfield where he raised stock cows and in 2008 he purchased Cliff’s Place in Horton. Bill enjoyed cattle, working on the farm, flying in his younger years, and visiting with people. He will be remembered for taking an interest in everyone and always being able to make friends fast.

Living family members include his sister, Betty Emmel of Charles City; nieces and nephews, Charles Nauman of Bishop, Calif., Patti (Dave) Tibbitts of Charles City and Karl Emmel of Charles City; and great nieces and nephews, Brian Nauman of Bishop, Calif, Nathaniel King of Mason City, Lydia King of Charles City and Callista King of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Lucille Nauman; and a nephew, Michael Nauman.

Maxine Pattschull


Maxine Pattschull, 83, of Charles City, died Thursday, March 4, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Maxine Ivadelle Freiberg Pattschull was born February 10, 1927, at Charles City, the daughter of Carl and Sylvia (Erion) Freiberg. She was raised by her aunt and uncle Elsie and Dale Stewart. Maxine graduated from the Charles City High School in 1945. On February 1, 1946, she was united in marriage to Everett Pattschull at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. They farmed southwest of Charles City. Maxine also worked at Salsbury Laboratories and for several years at Northwestern Bell. Her interests included traveling, playing cards and bargain shopping. She always looked forward to sharing her life with her family and friends.

Living family members include her husband, Everett Pattschull of Charles City, three children, Kathy (Douglas) Franke, Debra (James) Mehmen both of Charles City and Tracy (Janice) Pattschull of Greene; seven grandchildren, Bridgette (Bryan) Quade, Brandon (Lindsey) Franke, Heather, Shane and Ashly Mehmen, Toya (Jeff) Heideman and Cody Pattschull; six great grandchildren; a sister, Mavis (Clem) Kilby of Charles City; three half sisters, Patty (Lyle) Bunston of Goldfield and Jean (Roger) Duffield and Carmen (Keith) Angell both of Charles City; and two half brothers, William (Sharon) Freiberg of Charles City and William (Mavis) Severson of Waterloo. Dale Arthur Nehls was born August 7, 1969, at Charles City, the son of Clair and LaDonna (Simerson) Nehls. He graduated from the Charles City High School, received his Bachelors Degree from Luther College and attended Iowa State. Dale had been employed for several years at Principal Financial Group in Mason City. His interests included playing guitar and listening to music. Dale also looked forward to the times spent with his family.

Living family members include three brothers, David (Charlotte) Nehls of Charles City, Doug Nehls of Norwalk and Daniel “Pete” Nehls and special friend Toots of New Hampton; seven sisters, Mary (Gary) Druehl of Colwell, Karen (Bob) Roethler of Charles City, Diana (Dean) Bucknell of Charles City, Susan (Steve) Redmond of Charles City, Chris (Tony) Byers of Colwell, Cathy (Randy) Nibaur of Austin, Minn. and Theresa (David) Turpen of Webster City; a foster brother, Bill (Edna) Wynniger of Lansing; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Emma Mohring


Emma Mohring, 96, of Charles City, died Sunday, February 28, 2010 at Eleventh Street Chautauqua in Charles City.

Emma Tahlkeanne Amelia Mohring was born on December 31, 1913 in Kossuth County, Iowa, the daughter of Klaas and Mary (Rath) Zimmerman. She was baptized at the Lutheran Church in Lotts Creek, Iowa. As a child, her family moved to the Rockford area, where she was confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church. She was united in marriage to Delwood “Heinie” Mohring on August 20, 1931 in Charles City. In 1936 her family again moved north of Charles City, her father would pass away soon after. Heinie and Emma would eventually move to their current home, the longtime family farm, north of Charles City.

Emma was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. She enjoyed taking care of her home and working on the farm. She also took pride that she still mowed her own yard and drove her car until the age of 95 years. Her family was important to her and she kept up with the daily events of their lives. She loved the family celebrations where she always volunteered to bring the pies, with raisin cream, apple and custard being her favorites.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Delwood “Heinie” in 1987; great grandson, David Kapping in 1974; son-in-law, Delbert Kapping in 1990; sisters, Louise Anderson and Ella Hicok; and brothers, Herman, Benny and Emil Zimmerman.

Jamie L. Fox, 33, of Greene, died February 27, 2010, in an accident.

Jamie Lee Barr was born January 20, 1977, at Charles City, the daughter of Steven and Diane (Sabin) Barr. She graduated from Charles City High School. On March 30, 1996, she was united in marriage to Chet Fox at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Jamie was employed at Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City as a secretary. She coached girls’ softball in Greene and was very active in her girls’ activities. Her interests included jewelry making, arts, crafts, camping, boating, outdoors, animals, hobby farming and spending time with her family.

Living family members include her husband, Chet Fox of Greene; three daughters, Allison, Kaylie and Hannah Fox all of Greene; parents, Steve and Diane Barr of Charles City; sister, Angie (Tim) Ross of Austin, Minn.; brother, Doug (Amber) Barr of Tecumseh, Okla.; maternal grandmother, Agnes Sabin of Oelwein; paternal grandparents; Roland and Annette Barr of Mercedes, Tex.; parents-in-law, Shelley Fox of Cresco and David Fox of New Haven; and many aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

Amanda Catherine Howe Gray was born April 25, 1908, at Charles City, the daughter of Frank and Bertha (Harnisch) Howe. She graduated from the Charles City High School. Amanda married Frank Gray and they later separated. For many years she worked at the Oliver Corporation. Amanda was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church where she had sung in the choir. Her interests included reading the Bible and cooking.

Living family members include three children, Dorothy Hadley of Charles City, Ronald Gray of Big Lake, Minn. and Raymond (Gerri) Gray of Littleton, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Ronald E. Wulff


Ronald E. Wulff, 77, of Charles City, died Friday, February 19, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Memorial services for Ronald Wulff will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Robert Holdorf of the West Saint Charles United Methodist Church will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date in the West Saint Charles Cemetery rural Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Ronald Eugene Wulff was born May 26, 1932, at Charles City, the son of Lawrence and Elsie (Melcher) Wulff. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1950. Ronald proudly served in the United States Marines during the Korean Conflict at which time he was stationed in Japan for 15 months. On June 10, 1955, he was united in marriage to Viola Bennett at the West Saint Charles United Methodist Church. They farmed all of their lives west of Charles City. He was a member of the West Saint Charles United Methodist Church where he had served in various offices of the church, had been on the Board of Directors of the Farmers Coop in Rudd, Iowa Nut Growers Association, and The Marquetry Society. Ronald was an artist known for his work in marquetry, which was featured on Iowa Public Television. He was man with a passion for knowledge and had great curiosity about the world around him. Ronald was an avid reader who relished learning and sharing his knowledge. His many interests included beekeeping, growing orchids, maintaining a greenhouse, large gardens and propagating and planting nut and fruit trees. Ronald loved his family and shared a very special bond with his grandchildren.

Living family members include his wife, Viola Wulff of Charles City, four children, Pamela (Greg) Hodgman of Kalamazoo, Mich., Marvyn (Dawn) Wulff of Mason City, Julia (Greg) Formanek of Farmersburg and Valerie (Bill) Sherman of Alpharetta, Ga.; eight grandchildren, Jennifer (Josh) Flowers, Eric Hodgman, Brenton, Kyle and Joshua Formanek, Miranda Wulff and Nicholas and Andrew Sherman; a great granddaughter, Madeleine Flowers; a sister, Joyce (Jim) Shover of Hopkinton; and two brothers, Lee (Marilyn) Wulff and Myron Wulff both of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; and a sister-in-law, Patsy Wulff.

Elsie Conway

Elsie Conway, 90, of Charles City, died Friday, February 19, 2010, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Elsie Mary Bill Conway was born February 23, 1919, at Roanoke, Ill., the daughter of Fred and Rosa (Davis) Bill. She was one year old when her parents moved to Iowa where they settled on a farm north of Colwell. She started her education at the Colwell School until her parents moved and she finished her education at the Cedar Township Country School. On August 30, 1942, she was united in marriage to Ward Conway at Bethany, Mo. Ward left on October 5, 1942, to serve in the United States Coast Guard. Following basic training his permanent base was Half Moon Bay, Calif. where she joined him immediately when she received the call that she could come. While there Elsie worked in public businesses, met many new people and friends who she has kept in contact with until her death. After Ward’s Discharge they came back to Iowa where they bought an acreage in the Carville vicinity. She then began employment at Charles City Manufacturing Company where she worked for many years. Die to Ward’s health they had to quit farming. After the sale they took a trip to the west coast to visit relatives and friends. When they returned they purchased a mobile home in Nashua and Elsie once again decided to seek employment. K Mart was just starting to take applications for their original store in Charles City so she put in her application and received a call to report to work. After 14 years with K Mart she decided to retire and move to Greene but didn’t like retirement so took partime employment with Lyle and Sylvia Schafer at their restaurant. At age 75 she decided it was time to retire for good. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and V.F.W. Auxiliary in Charles City. She enjoyed crocheting, Knitting, embroidering and sewing. Elsie liked to play 500, bowling, pitching horse shoes, watching ball games and spending time with her family and friends.

Living family members include a step daughter, Dorothy Crandell of Mason City; five sisters, Violet (Jerald) Klassen of Belvidere, Ill., Grace Waddell, Myrtle Albrecht, Frieda (Bill) Hart, Arlene (Kenneth) Carr all of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

She leaves to join her loving husband Ward who died on January 19, 1981; her parents; sisters, Mae Mackamul, Florence Wells, Clara Parker, Dorothy Logan, Edith Weidner and Lois Bill who died in infancy; and four brothers, Ernest, Lester, Elmer and Harvey Bill.

Gloria Ann Bublitz Stevenson was born September 8, 1937, at Osage, the daughter of Harvey and Irene (Ingersoll) Bublitz. She graduated from the Grafton High School. Gloria was confirmed at Emmanuel Lutheran Church at Grafton where she also attended Sunday school and worship services as a child. On April 22, 1956, she was united in marriage to Ralph Stevenson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They later divorced. Gloria lived most of her life at Elma. Her interests included flower and vegetable gardening, dancing, roller skating, and listening to and playing music.

Living family members include five children, Dawn (Bob) Gansen of Elma, Jeleen “Jo” (Ron) Dugan of Floyd, Janice Schmidtke of Mason City, Connie (Kent) Vrieze of Floyd and Valerie (Tom) Schrage of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and her mother, Irene Bublitz of Charles City formerly of Grafton.

Evelyn Houdek, 72, of Charles City, died Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Evelyn Houdek will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City.

Evelyn Marie Logan Houdek was born June 10, 1937, at Oakwood, the daughter of James and Frances (Roetheler) Logan. She received her education at the Immaculate Conception School in Charles City. On January 5, 1963, she was united in marriage to Virgil Houdek. They lived in Charles City all of their lives. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Evelyn loved to spend time with her family, friends and “treasure” hunting. She will always be remembered as a loving wife and devoted mother and grandmother.

Fred H. Cummins


Fred H. Cummins, 98, of Charles City, died Sunday morning, February 14, 2010 at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City of natural causes.

Internment and memorial services will be held at a later date in the Union (Iowa) Cemetery and the Honey Creek/ New Providence Church.

He was born George Kenneth Gibson September 15th, 1911, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the third child of Esther and William Gibson. His parents died shortly after and he was adopted by Elda and Frank Cummins who were homesteading in Canada at the time. He was renamed Fred Henry Cummins and the family moved back to a farm south of Union, Iowa. He attended the Bentley Township School and graduated from Union High School in 1928. On February 6, 1940, he was united in marriage to Lucile Lepley. They spent their entire married life on farms near Union and New Providence. The last three years, he has lived in Charles City at the Starr Home and the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home.

Fred is survived by a daughter, Jean (Richard) Granger of Atlantic; a son George (Vonda) of Charles City; four grandchildren David (Des Moines), Aaron (Woodstock, IL); Rachel (Aventura, FL) and Molly and great-grandson Nicholaus (Phoenix, AZ); and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife (1993), his parents, his siblings and an infant son Franklin.

Dorothy Louise Scott


The family of Dorothy Louise Scott is full of sorrow to announce of her passing on Sunday, February 14, 2010 at the age of 90 years at Eleventh Street Chautauqua in Charles City.

A funeral service will be held at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 10009 Union Avenue in rural Nashua on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Charles Dorsey officiating. Burial will follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in rural Nashua. Dorothy was born on May 14, 1919 in Floyd County, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Anna Marie (Litterer) Vetter. She was the first child of seven children. She grew very close to all her brothers, Gerry and Donald Vetter, and her sisters, Elsie Heitz, Edna Speicher, Louise Gersema and Laura Koeff. For many years they pleasured each other’s company by fishing, going to breakfast once a month and playing cards. Everything she touched, she handled with great care, which included gardening, sewing, baking, quilting and crocheting. She was united in marriage to Leon Charles Scott on September 25, 1948. They celebrated their lives together for 43 years, until his passing in 1991. She has now joined with the love of her life once again on this Valentine’s Day.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Chester (Becky) Scott of Lemoore, CA and Thomas Scott of Waverly. Dorothy put her heart into her family, which brought forth generations of four grandchildren, Jamie, Jodi, Jeremy and Jennalee; and eleven great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Donald (Shari) Vetter of Greene and Gerald (Beulah) Vetter of Nashua; and sisters, Edna (Donald) Splicker of Fredricksburg, Louise (Clarence) Gersema of Nashua and Laura Koeff of Nashua.

She was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, church circle, Senior Center, U.A.W. Auxiliary, U.A.W. Retirees and Pension Club. Her interests included crafts, cooking, canning, playing cards, watching the Chicago Bulls and Iowa Hawkeye basketball games on TV and fishing trips up north.

Living family members include her two sons, Gerald “Jerry” Zimmer and special friend Cathy Diercks of Charles City and Jim Zimmer of Lockport, Ill.; grandson, Kurt (Andrea) Zimmer of Seymour, Ind.; twin great grandchildren, Tyler and Kamryn Zimmer; two step great-grandchildren, Calli Diercks and Reid Johnson; sister-in-law, Yvonne Krumm of St. Ansgar: and brother-in-law, Bernie Zimmer of Texarkana, Ark.

Charles Applegate


Charles (Chuck) Applegate, 75, of Charles City, died Saturday morning, February 13, 2010, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Private family memorial services were held Sunday.

Charles Donald Applegate was born July 21, 1934 at Ft. Crook, Nebr, the son of Charles and Mary (Fisher) Applegate. He attended Lincoln High School in Lincoln, Nebr. Charles served in the United States Air Force in Korea. On January 5, 1958 he was united in marriage to Diane Collins at Charles City. The marriage later ended in divorces. Charles was employed at White Farm for over 30 years. He was a member of the Elks.

Living family members include his daughters Kelly (Mark Finlay) Applegate of Savannah, Ga., Vicky (Kelly) Duncan of Charles City and Mitzy Applegate of Chicago, Ill.; grandsons Greyson and Ellis Finlay, Corey and Tyler Hawke and Christopher Duncan; great granddaughter McKynlee Hawke; sisters Bonnie Woodard of Minneapolis, Minn. and Donna Denton of Hendersonville, Tenn.; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Chuck’s passions were his family, his beagles, his garden, and the great outdoors. A champion Canadian carp fisherman, he cherished trips to Canada with his buddies. His devotion to Cornhusker football was matched only by his commitment to growing the perfect tomato. Chuck was known for his quick wit, his gift for wordplay and his ahead-of-their-time inventions. A storyteller, songwriter and poet, Chuck infused everything he did with his quirky sense of humor, appreciation for the absurd and love of laughter.

Catherine Phyllis Vestal was born February 25, 1929, at Marble Rock, the daughter of Evander and Lucille (Freeman) Vestal. She graduated from the Marble Rock High School. Catherine was employed at the telephone company in Greene as an operator. On November 7, 1951, she was united in marriage to Vernon “Bud” Carr at Oklahoma City, Okla. Her interests included gardening, reading, traveling, needlework, flea markets, garage sales and visiting national parks.

She was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Historical Society and Moose Lodge. Her interests included bingo, cooking, baking and spending time with her grandchildren.

Beverly E. Hibner


Beverly E. Hibner, 80, of Charles City, died Saturday, February 6, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City after a courageous struggle with cancer.

Beverly Elaine Loomis Hibner was born October 10, 1929, at Osage, the daughter of Lee and Helen (Pint) Loomis. She graduated from the Floyd High School. On March 7, 1948, she was united in marriage to Charles Hibner at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed and raised livestock near Charles City. Beverly was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and Charles City Senior Citizens. Some of her favorites included cooking, flower gardening, playing cards, fishing, camping and listening to bluegrass music. Beverly always enjoyed special times with her family and friends and dog Minnie watching the beauty of wildlife around the pond. Beverly’s family was always very precious to her and she was thankful for the time she had to share her life with them.

Living family members include her husband, Charles Hibner of Charles City; a daughter, Diane Shearman and fiancé Aaron Hobert of Charles City; and a granddaughter, Sarah Shearman of Ankeny.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Robert H. Handt


Robert Herman Handt, 87, of 508 7th Avenue in Charles City, passed away Thursday, February 4, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa in Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main Street in Charles City on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Military rites will be conducted at the church following the service. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Bob was born on November 21, 1922 in rural Floyd County, the son of Herman and Karoline (Troge) Handt. He served in the United States Army during World War II, earning a Bronze Star for his service in New Guinea and the Philippines. On December 18, 1949, he married Wilma Koebrick at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Bob worked at the Oliver Tractor Plant-White Motor Corporation in Charles City for 38 years, retiring in 1980. Prior to suffering a stroke in 2002, Bob enjoyed playing euchre at the Elks Club, was a longtime member of Wildwood Golf Course, played many of the area golf courses with his son, Mike, and especially looked forward to the annual fishing trips to Mille Lacs and other Minnesota lakes with his brothers, Willis and Dick, and other relatives and friends. He also enjoyed catching small mouth bass and walleyes locally in the Cedar and Shell Rock Rivers. He was also an avid ice fisherman and had a talent for catching crappies. Following the stroke, he was still able to, and thoroughly enjoyed mowing lawns with his son, who operated a lawn care business.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Florence Field and Helen Kozak; brothers, Chuck Handt and Dick Handt; brothers-in-law, Emory Field and Boris Kozak; and sister-in-law, Helen Handt.

Those left to honor his memory include his loving wife of 60 years, Wilma; son, Mike Handt of Mason City; daughter, Teri (David) Nelson of Medina, MN; grandchildren, Kristi and Matthew Nelson, both of LaCrosse, WI; brother, Willis (Shielah) Handt of Mason City; sister-in-law, Lolly Handt of Charles City; a special niece, Sandy (Ken) Kline of Mason City; good friends, Robert and Diann Riha of Charles City; many nieces and nephews; and not to be overlooked is Bob’s dear little companion, Scamp, who knew when he was not feeling well and spent many hours curled up at Bob’s feet while he napped on the couch.

Marian Wood


Marian Wood, 94, of Marble Rock, died Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at Port Charles Assisted Living in Charles City.

Funeral services for Marian Wood will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City. Pastor Gary Van Wert will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Greene.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday and an hour prior to the services at the church on Monday.

Marian Elaine Marsh Belknap Wood was born February 8, 1915, in Greene, the daughter of Ira and Linda (Fischer) Marsh. She attended country school, graduating in 1933 from Greene High School. On August 12, 1937, Marian was united in marriage to Marion Belknap at Austin, Minn. They farmed east of Greene until Marion’s death on May 3, 1958. To this union three children were born. For a number of years Marian and Verle Townseley ran the Corner Dress Shop in Greene. Marian married Gordon Wood on September 8, 1962 at the United Methodist Church in Greene. Gordon died on May 12, 1987. Marian was a devoted member of the United Methodist Church in Greene and Marble Rock. She served in various offices of the church, was organist and choir member. Marian was also a 25 year member of the United Methodist Women. She was an excellent cook, hard working farm wife and loving mother and grandmother. Marian was a truly special person who will be missed very much.

Living family members include twin daughters, Kay (Franklin) Troutner of Nashua and Karen (Noel) Mizell of St. Charles, Mo.; five grandchildren, Tricia (Tim) Schultz, Teria Troutner, Tina (Jon) Schmidt, Tammy Maygar and Todd Mizell; three great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Dee Belknap of Eldora and her three children, Roger, Marsha and Rodney; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; a son, Francis Belknap on September 11, 2007; a son-in-law, Noel Mizell on October 5, 2008; two brothers, Clinton and Dwight Marsh; and two sisters, Lillian Marsh and Harriet Scheidler.

Oliver W. Hughes


Oliver W. Hughes, 93, of Charles City, died Wednesday evening, January 27, 2010, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Memorial services for Oliver Hughes will be held 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Phil Corr of the First Congregational Church will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date.

The family will greet friends from 1:30 p.m. until service time at the funeral home on Monday.

Oliver Winfield Hughes was born January 6, 1917, in Hudson Township, Wis., the son of Almon J. and Ruby (Benoy) Hughes. He graduated from the Roberts High School in Roberts, Wis. From 1942 to 1945, Oliver served in the United States Army. In November of 1943, he was united in marriage to Mary Genevieve Deere at Chicago. They later divorced. Oliver was a master carpenter, cabinet maker and for 20 years he was employed at the University of Minnesota as Senior Construction Supervisor. He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, and Carpenter’s Union of Minnesota. His interests included furniture building, playing bridge, ballroom dancing, reading biographical history, traveling, playing the organ and trumpet and photography.

Living family members include his five children, Sheilah Dedrickson (Jack) McClain of Charles City, Barbara (Paul) Williams of Orange Beach, Ala., Pamela (Tom) Ernst of St. Paul, Minn., Norma (John) Stevenson of Eagan, Minn. and Almon John Hughes III of Burnsville, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and many cousins; nieces; and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents; daughter, Lesley Hughes; two sisters, Maxine Baier and Marcella Hughes; and two brothers, Wendell “Jiggs” Hughes and Lesley Hughes.

Robert L. “Roy” Hume


Robert L. “Roy” Hume, 83, of Charles City, died Tuesday morning, January 26, 2010, at the 9th St. Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Memorial services for Robert Hume will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastor David Werges and Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

The family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church on Saturday.

Robert Leroy Hume was born February 2, 1926, at Charles City, the son of Robert A. and Gladys Irene (Waters) Hume, the fourth of eleven children. He received his education at McIntire and later received his GED. Roy proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. Roy met Ann Mackamul in Charles City and they were married at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church on September 1, 1946. Roy worked at Salsbury Laboratories, Oliver Corporation, Charles City Western Railroad and the Charles City High School. Both Roy and Ann were instrumental leaders at the Charles City Senior Center where Roy had served as president for many years and managed the Senior Center bingo. He was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, American Legion and V.F.W. Roy enjoyed hunting and fishing. For many years he built a variety of grandfather, mantel and wall clocks for family and friends. His greatest joy, however, was spending time with his family and friends. The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Schrodt, Hospice of North Iowa and the staff of 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home for the loving care they gave to Roy.

Living family members include his wife of 63 years, Ann Hume of Charles City; two daughters, Marcia (Jack) Taylor of Marble Rock and Cynthia (Lee) Chambers of Robins; four grandchildren, Michael (Gina) Taylor, Wendy (John) Dearth, Pamela (Ronn) Datema and Robert (Jill) Chambers; a great grandson, Douglas Taylor; four brothers, Albert (Edith) Hume of Ark., James (Cecelia) Hume and William (Diane) Hume both of Tex. and Lawrence (Marie) Hume of Mo.; and three sisters, Marie Herman of Minn., Margaret Lubbert of Riceville and Laura (Joe) Fal of Mo.

William “Bill” Cole


William “Bill” Cole, 91, of Charles City, died Tuesday, January 26, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City after a long illness.

A funeral Mass for Bill Cole will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. The Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. There will be a flag presentation and taps by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the St. Frances De Sales Catholic Cemetery in Ossian. Monsignor Cletus J. Hawes will officiate.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday where the Knights of Columbus will lead the Rosary at 4 p.m. and a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue an hour before the Mass at the church on Saturday.

William Cole was born September 8, 1918, at Postville, the son of Harry D. and Rose A. (Shaffer) Cole. He graduated from the Postville High School in 1936. Bill served in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945. On September 19, 1944, he was united in marriage to Kathryn Becker at the St. Frances De Sales Catholic Church in Ossian. He was employed as an agent for the Milwaukee Railroad from 1941 until his retirement in 1980. While living in Ossian, Bill also owned a TV repair business. Bill was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, V.F.W., past American Legion finance officer, Life Member of the National Rifle Association, American Radio Relay League, various amateur radio clubs, Rail Road Transportation Communication Union, 168th Infantry Headquarters Committee Association, 34th Infantry Division Association and the Quarter Century Wireless Association. His interests included woodworking, reading, crossword puzzles, gardening, Ham Radio, hunting and trap shooting.

Living family members include his wife, Kathryn Cole of Charles City; two children, Karen (Mark) Tyler of Cedar Rapids and William Cole of St. Louis, Mo.; four grandchildren, Christopher (Charity) Tyler, Sara Tyler, Brandon and Jordan Cole; one great granddaughter, Taylor Monnahan; sister, Jane Walsh of Westchester, Ill; sister-in-law, Doris Cole of Decorah; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harry Cole; and sister, Margaret Heaverlo.

Evelyn Beryl Gerber was born December 29, 1943, at Austin, Minn., the daughter of Evert and Christine Beryl (Thompson) Gerber. She graduated from the Rockford High School and the La’ James Beauty School. On November 4, 1962, she was united in marriage to Robert D. Schrage at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, rural Osage. Evelyn was employed at several area nursing homes as a dietary supervisor and then at Mercy as billing technician. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford and Ruth Circle at church. Her interests included gardening, cooking, baking, sewing, shopping and attending her grandchildren’s events.

Living family members include her four daughters, Carmen (Bill) Staudt of Rockford, Lisa Lines of Rockford, Judy (Steve) DeGraw of Sheffield and Suzanne (Brian) Ross of Charles City; 12 grandchildren, Alisha, Nate and Nicholas Staudt, Chris, Kyle and Cole Lines, Josh, Mackenzie and Kristina DeGraw and Macy, Madison and Brianna Ross; sister, Marlene Johnson of Plymouth; and many nieces and nephews.

Wendell L. Hobert


Wendell L. Hobert, 89, of Charles City, died Thursday, January 14, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Wendell Lester Hobert was born May 15, 1920, at Charles City, the son of Lester and Lulu (Pfeiffer) Hobert. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1938. On September 28, 1941, he was united in marriage to Phyllis “Fern” Newton at Charles City. From 1942 to 1946, he served in the United States Navy. After WWII, Wendell farmed and did electrical work for local contractors until 1975 when he started Hobert Electric. He was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W., Charles City Patriotic Association, and Care Review Committee for Iowa Nursing Homes. Wendell was active as a leader for the Boy Scouts and the Electrical Board for Charles City. His interests included trout fishing, mushroom hunting, gardening, traveling and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Living family members include his six children, Linda (Robert) Milton of Phoenix, Ariz., Robert (Judy) Hobert of Penn Valley, Calif., Lester (Linda) Hobert of Charles City, Mary (Jerry) Cross of Forest City, Edward (Teresa) Hobert of Charles City and Aaron Hobert and fiancée Diane Shearman of Charles City; 14 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; sister, Dorothy (Don) Swinton of Waverly; and several nieces and nephews.

Teri Ross


Teri Ross, 61, of 804 N. Federal Avenue in Mason City died Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa.

She moved to Mason City in 1968. Teri was employed in the MIS Department at Mercy Medical Center for over 30 years, a job which she enjoyed very much. She was very family-oriented and enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews.

Those left to cherish her memory include her siblings, Frances Berchtold, Roger Ross, Carol (Jerry) Meader, Larry (Jenny) Ross, Vicki (Bruce) Inman and Jimmie (Gwen) Ross; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Dr. Kenneth P. Steimel


Dr. Kenneth P. Steimel, 78, of Charles City, died Monday evening, January 11, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Dr. Ken Steimel will be held 10:00 A.M. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Monsignor Walter Brunkan, Monsignor Stanley Hayek and Father Carl Ries will concelebrate the Mass. There will be a flag presentation and taps by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit. Burial will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Eagle Center.

Kenneth Peter Steimel was born September 10, 1931, at Gilbertville the son of Oscar P. and Frances M. (Weber) Steimel. He graduated from St. Mary of Mt. Carmel High School in 1949, Loras College (Cum Laude) in 1954 and Creighton University Medical School in 1958. On July 7, 1956, he was united in marriage to Honore Jones at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg. In 1959, he served his internship at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, Minn. Dr. Ken began his practice in Osage with Dr. Robert Huber. From 1960 to 1962, he served in the United States Air Force as an Aviation Medical Examiner, while stationed at San Antonio, Texas. After his time in the Air Force, Dr. Steimel returned to Charles City to join Dr. Huber again as a family practice physician until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of the Iowa Medical Association, Floyd County Medical Association, American Medical Association, American Legion, Izaak Walton League and a 33 year charter member of the National Fishing Hall of Fame. Ken dearly loved his time in the North woods where he could truly relax. Other memberships included Knights of Columbus and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where he trained altar servers. His interests included spring and fall fishing, hunting, summer gardening, traveling somewhere tropical in the winter and “hanging out on the beach”, reading outdoor adventure magazines and eating fried chicken.

Living family members include his wife of 53 years, Honore Steimel of Charles City; five daughters, Sheila (Tom) Ossowski of Anoka, Minn., Jeannine (Craig) Fisher of Charles City, Susan Steimel and special friend, Todd Virchow of Garner, Madonna (Rusty) Weiss of Kasota, Minn. and Kari (Brendan) Foust of Rochester, Minn.; 14 grandchildren, Dan (Katie) Ossowski, Pete (Andrea) Ossowski, Jake Ossowski, Joe Fisher, Amy Fisher, Katlyn Fisher, Sara Hoover, Sabrina Hoover, Jestine Weiss, Kaelan Weiss, Antonia Weiss, Teagan Weiss, Mikella Foust and Nonie Foust; brother, Don (Mary) Steimel of Newhall; three sisters, Pat (Dr. Joe) Monaco of Wausau, Wis., Marge Sauve` of Chandler, Ariz. and Sharon Davis of Waterloo; many nieces; nephews; cousins; special cousin, Earl (Miriam) Steimel of Eagle Center; and two sisters-in-law, Kathleen Jones of Cedar Rapids and Charlotte (Mike) Mack of Waterloo.

Mattie Mae Burgess Kelly was born April 11, 1925, at Kingstree, S.C., the daughter of William and Sarah (Oliver) Burgess. She received her education at Kingstree. Mattie married Carl Kelly in 1952. She worked for many years as a housekeeper in nursing homes.

Lucille Clapp, 90, of Charles City, died Sunday, January 10, 2010, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Lucille Clapp will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

The family will greet friends Wednesday from 10 a.m. until service time at the church.

Lucille Edna Beckwith Clapp was born April 17, 1919, at Charles City, the daughter of Glen and Mary (Tynan) Beckwith. She received her education at the Immaculate Conception School. On November 27, 1934 she was united in marriage to Stanley Clapp. Over the years she was a housekeeper in various homes at Charles City. Lucille was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Catherine Circle, Moose Lodge and Ladies of the Moose. She enjoyed dancing, sewing and house cleaning.

Living family members include two children, Merlyn (Margaret) Clapp of Charles City and Carol (John “Jay” Caneff) Patterson-Caneff of Hastings, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Heather (Sam) Hanson, Jonathon (Liz) Patterson, Susan (Mort) David, Vernon (Tracey) Clapp, Mary Elin, Bertha (Mike) Lambright and Kevin (Tonya) Clapp; 16 great grandchildren; and several great-great grandchildren and many step grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on March 7, 1978; two sisters, Lola Harms and marvel Leon; and a brother, Donald Beckwith.

Lawrence “Bud” Lomison


Lawrence “Bud” Lomison, 91, of Charles City, died Friday, January 8, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Bud Lomison will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Debra Lincoln of the Colwell United Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Tuesday.

Lawrence Oliver Lomison was born August 1, 1918, at Waterloo, the son of Homer and Edith (Gumble) Lomison. He graduated in 1936 from East High in Waterloo. Bud worked at Rath Packing before serving in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater. In 1947 he moved north of Bassett where he farmed until 1984. On April 27, 1956, he was united in marriage to Maxine Sturdivant Rowley. In 1985, after his retirement, they moved to Charles City. He was a member of the Colwell United Church of Christ where he held various offices in the church, American Legion Auxiliary, Heritage Club, Senior Citizens, Charles City Twisters Square Dance Cllub and Marathon 500. Bud also served as a trustee in Deerfield Township. His interests included bowling, playing cards, dancing and woodworking. Over the years he did many odd jobs for his family and friends.

Living family members include two children, Shirley (Russell) Nordman and Kenneth Rowley both of Charles City; four grandchildren, Jeff (Melody) Nordman, Tim Rowley and special friend Becky, Denise (Brian) Kelly and Rachael (Barry) Kelly; six great grandchildren, Chase, Alex, Brianna, Alyssa and Spencer Kelly and Nicole (Travis) Hanaway; and two great great grandchildren, Levi Lindner and Halle Hanaway.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife on April 7, 2006; a daughter-in-law, Mary Rowley, and a sister, Dorothy Kline.

Albert “Whitey” Schultz


Albert “Whitey” Schultz, 86, formerly of Rockford, died Thursday, January 7, 2010 at the Nora Springs Care Center.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd Street SE in Mason City. Pastor Jim Turner of the Shell Rock First United Methodist Church will officiate. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, January 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in Park Cemetery in Nora Springs. Whitey was born on August 16, 1923 in Stillwater, OK, the son of Ernest and Dorothy (Schwade) Schultz. His family moved to Nora Springs when he was very young. Whitey graduated from Nora Springs and attended a semester of college at Upper Iowa University, before being drafted into the Army during World War II. He served for 27 months in the South Pacific, receiving a Bronze Star for his part in the Liberation of Luzon. Whitey was wounded during his serivice in the Pacific Islands. After returning home from the war, he was united in marriage to Shirley Symes on April 6, 1947. The couple made their home in Nora Springs. Shirley passed away in December of 1947. Whitey then met LaVon Schrage Brown and they were married on November 26, 1948. He would also begin his career with Lehigh Portland Cement in 1948, where he would be employed for nearly 30 years. He was a repairman, and also served as the President for the Cement, Lime and Gypsum Local Union 106 and was at one time the Regional Vice President for the union. Whitey and his family moved to an acreage in Rockford in 1959, where he operated a farm. LaVon passed away in February of 2003.

Whitey was very proud to his role in the NIAD Labor Counicl and his role in the Clear Lake Labor Day Dance and the scholarship program for deserving high school students. He was very active in his union, and his service earned him the honor of being in the Union Hall of Fame AFL-CIO. Throughout his entire life, Whitey developed into a master storyteller, always on the lookout for someone to tell his stories to. In his later years, he enjoyed playing cards and following the Women’s Pool League.

Whitey will be loved and missed by his many friends and family. Those left to honor his memory include his children, Virginia Brown of Charles City, Virgil (Claudia) Brown of New Concord, NC, Larry Schultz of Waverly, Dan (Sue) Schultz of Stillwater, MN, Mark (Beth) Schultz of Gales Ferry, CT, Duane (Jane) Schultz of Iowa Falls, Peggy Cheney of Indianola, and Ben (Valerie) Schultz of Des Moines; 24 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; sister, Irma Peterson; and brother, Fred Schultz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Shirley and LaVon; grandson, Doug Brown; sisters, Rosie Lee and Bertha Swartwood; and brother, Herman Schultz.

Laura Boggess


Laura Boggess, 70, of Charles City, died Thursday, January 7, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services for Laura Boggess will be held 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Temple Baptist Church. Pastor Rick Fessel will officiate. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday and from 12:30 until service time at the church on Tuesday.

Laura Jean Timmons Boggess was born May 22, 1939, in Floyd County, the daughter of Jesse and Bernice (Jones) Timmons. She attended Charles City High School and later received her GED. On June 16, 1956, she was united in marriage to Earl Boggess. Laura accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior after listening to Back to the Bible. This made a profound change in her life. She was always concerned about her family’s salvation and relationship to Christ. Laura was a member of Temple Baptist Church. Her interest in others was made evident by her cooking for them at various times and sending greeting cards. Laura’s family was always important to her and she took every opportunity to share her life, love and Savior with them.

Living family members include her husband, Earl Boggess of Charles City; four children, LeRoy (Kellie Ann) Boggess of Charles City, Rod (Sharon) Boggess and Jeri (Dan) Marzen both of Grinnell, and Rick (Deane) Boggess of West Des Moines; seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and a sister, Myrna (Darryl) Sletten of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Sherrry Marzen; and a brother, Russell Timmons.
